Determining type of paint used

All,

Kiriko's hull was painted a dark green color at some point in past. The broker had listed that the paint was awlgrip, but considering many things stated by the broker were incorrect I don't know if that is truly the type of paint used. I am not able to contact the previous owner(s) either. Is there a way to determine the type of paint used? I want to touch up a few scratches and scrapes now that she's on the hard. I also hope to possibly wax the hull if the paint is compatible with that. Obviously I will wait for optimum weather conditions for any touch up work.

Thanks,

Manny

Be careful with wax products on paint. Most waxes contain a mild abrasive which will dull the finish. I believe Awlgrip has a proprietary product, Awlcare?

Thank you - the video is helpful. Does anyone know if there is any harm in using a 1 part paint to touch up scratches if I do indeed have a two part paint?

To determine whether it is Awlgrip, find an area where it is not to noticeable, soak a rag in acetone, cover it with plastic, and tape around the edges for 24hours. Awlgrip will be undetectable, while other paints will bubble up.

Even if it is, you can easily touch up with one part paints.

Thanks Chris - I have a good spot I can use to test. Just for S&G's i tried acetone for about 1/2 an hour on a spot and the paint didn't get soft or transfer to the rag. I will try the 24 hour test.

Acetone won't affect Awlgrip, or most any two part polyurethane. Nor will it affect cured gelcoat
Check the Boatworks video, I think Andy said to use the solvent designed for the 2 part paint. All in all, Acetone, also known as nail polish remover, is a pretty mild solvent.
