Determining Sail # From Hull ID #

I am under the impression that you can determine the sail # for your boat (i.e., the numbers placed on the sails for racing/I.D. purposes) from the Hull ID#. Is this true? If so, what digits do you use? I read that the first three digits are the MIC (Manufacturer's Identification Code). The fourth digit is also a letter, then there are 4 more numbers then another letter, 2 numbers (presumably the year of manufacture) and a final letter. I am presuming that the 4 numbers in the "middle" of all of this are the "sail number". Can someone confirm this or set me straight?? Thanks. I'd hate to put the wrong #s on new sails....One Day

Problem

I have a problem...I have a 1085 OD28 with hull number:XDYN 0585 K485so that means that boat was the 585th to roll (Or mabye float?) of the assembly line. That probably doesn't seem like a problem thus far. But....Take into account that OD28s were made from 1979 to 1986. In 1984 they changed the forward hatch design to a translucent (More modern-looking) lexan hatch. This changed the whole look and lines of the boat. I know that there are far more solid fiberglass older-style hatch 28s around than the translucent style. Mine is a translucent hatch. Again, no problem, right? Think again.My hull # is supposedly "0585", making it the 585th 28 to roll off the assambly line. I have seen newer ones than mine, too (They are 1986 models, and are destinguished by a translucent hatch in the roof of the main saloon)No problem yet? Heres the curve ball:O'Day only manufactured 507 O'Day 28s between 1979 and 1986.Did u catch it?How do you figure that one out?-BM

One Possible Explanation...

There were more than 507 OD28's produced. The figure (from Mike McIntires's site?) is probably not accurate. The hull number I would think is most accurate. My guess is the production run went slightly over 600 boats. Call Rudy and ask his opinion. 508-644-3001Don

Maybe Your Sail # Is Wrong

Ben--Ever consider that maybe your Hull ID # is right and the sail #, as applied, is wrong; maybe your source for # of OD 28's produced could be less than infallible....
