Desperately seeking teak.

Does anyone have a source for teak wood? I need to remake all of the wood in the cock pit for the 82 C27.
Most are about ½’’ thick by 4’’x30’’.
I have found some flooring dealers locally but they only carry ¾’’ thick and sell by the box. I could plane down but hate to waste the wood and money.
I have heard of tractor crates made of teak but whom and where I have no idea.
The other possibility is if someone else is in the same boat a box of teak flooring can be bought and divvied up.
I may be able to go with mahogany but it will not match hatch rails or grab rails.

Black locust will serve as well and the grain is quite similar.

H & L Marine in Rancho Domiquez should be able to accomodate anything you need.

By the way, the last time I made a purchase they told me they are now supplying West Marine. So, it may take a while to get it as WM has increased their demand.

frost lumber. 80-100 dollars per board foot--have fun!! add the usual wm markup, and i think frost looks better than a chandlery. by far.

Considered Starboard or some of the new PVC trim

While it is not all that cheap, starboard or the new PVC trim (HD or Lowe's) could look pretty and be maintenance free.

H&L may have the actual pieces that you need. The originally made all the interior & exterior wood for Catalina and several other mfg. You can drive over to their shop and pick up the stuff too.

Another wood that would be excellent to use is IPE .. You'd probably have to stain it to make it match color but the grain is similar to teak and it is a very dense and stable wood.

Caguy, I think it was Kubota tractors that had the teak crating. Call a local dealer and check. -Paul

Here's a thought, I was told a couple of years ago to check with shipping companies, apparently a lot of product is shipped in from Indonesia with Teak dunnage in the ships holds. Don't know how true that is, but dunnage is cheap, might be worth a call or two, I dunno\

Paxton Wood has stores throughout the country I think. They specialize in exotic wood and woodworking products. They are probably on the internet. Also, I have been buying mahogany plywood from an aircraft supplier. I think they use it in control panels. I believe their name is Wag-Aero and I found them on the net as well.

You may also want to call Minnies Yacht Surplus in Costa Mesa. They have had much of the original OEM stuff from Catalina in the store in the past.

Thanks everyone. I stopped by H&L and what a great place. The shop is huge and their supply of teak is endless.
Thanks Steve I would have never know about them without your suggestion. They don't have a website but they do have a catalogue they will send you.
They sell mainly to Marine stores.
I was able to get the wood that I needed. I will cut it tomorrow at school. I only have two days left in the wood shop before we begin a 11 day break, and hopefully float the boat this weekend.
I took some pictures while I was there.
I do have a question, what goes on the edge of the upper deck lid. More wood trim or a seal? I haven't been able to find detail pictures of other C27 decks.

The pictures don't show the upper deck edge.
They're not giving the stuff away. I ended up with about 7' more than I needed. It came out to $137. I can use the rest on the Luger.
Did you ever go into the shop area? The place is a wood workers dream.

Yes, I was in their shop. They have all of the stuff to make what you need and can do it quickly too.

If you have not been to Minnie's you owe yourself a trip over there too.

I have been there many times and spend hours there. Who do you recommend for a Loft in this area?
Thanks,
