Design considerations of the 49 wing keel

Thanks for taking the time.

I'd like to know your thoughts on the design of the wing keel for the 49. Do the wings have any other benefits other than ballast (such as lift)? And finally when comparing the wing keel to the fin keel, how much more drag does the wing keel generate?

Dave,

The wings do seal off the endplate effectively making the span of the keel more efficient. At higher angles of heel, the wings have upwind lift component adding to windward ability. In some velociities the wing keel has similar drag as the fin keel. The wing keel has more wetted surface and has more drag in under powered conditions. The drag difference changes depending upon the conditions.
