Sailing our 1994 Mac (classic swing cb) in New Mexico has become more of a challenge after two years of drought and radically lowered lakes. The New Mexico Sailing Club's marina at Heron Lake had to close in early of August after the lake reached its lowest level since the 4000,000-acre-foot reservoir had been created and filled and forcing cancellation of the club's Labor Day regatta. However, the Rio Grande Sailing Club will still be able to host events at Elephant Butte reservoir this fall, even though that lake now has but a small fraction of its two-million-acre-foot, 40,000 surface acre capacity. The season will start with the Sunrise 25-mile regatta, to be held the weekend of October 10--12, 2003. The event will be hosted at the Damsite Restaurant and Marina at the south end of Elephant Butte Lake State Park in southern New Mexico, two hours' drive from El Paso, TX and Albuquerque, NM. The race start will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 11, to the northeast of the "Elephant Butte" formation that shares its name with the lake and park.
