Hi, A lot of people use fish finders like the Humminbird ones. Although they don't shoot through weeds very well the transducer can be mounted in the V berth area to shoot through the hull. These give the added advantage of knowing where all the fish are too!

Transponder
These fish finders use a transponder that can shoot through the hull if they are mounted properly. I have mine in an area in front of the keel on the centerline of the boat. It is mounted in West system epoxy which I dammed up so that the epoxy is about 1/3" thick. I first tested it with tsome water in that section of the hold and it shot through the hull fine that way. It's been working fine here so far.

Toilet Ring Wax
I have talked to a few sailors who used toilet ring wax the same way that bilbo used the west system epoxy, but the wax allows you to easily move or replace the transducer.
