I would like to install a depth sounder in my oday 22 here is my question, if I use a through the hull transducer , the hull isn't flat so it would point at a 20 degree angle is this a problem ? what have others done? thanks steve

will work as long as you know about the angle, and adjust the alarm to a depth propere gor the angle, remember it will be straight some of the time. some take a piece of pvc pipe and make a tower about 6 inches tall and angled to bottom to make a pert mount, fill with water or mineral oil and mount transducer in a pvc cap. mine is at a slight angle and add a couple feet to the alarm depth.

Raymarine Bidata ,thru hull
steve, I found a dual sounder from Raymarine (ST 40 Bidata model) gives digital deepth and speed at the same time on one instrument. I am planning on this one and mounting the dual transducers just ahead of my shoal keel on my O'Day 222. This location should have the least turbulance. Been told that the paddlewheel speed sensor is mounted as a thru hull and can be pulled from the inside for cleaning as there is a check-valve.

I installed a Raymarine Bi-Data
This spring went for the bi-data that Chuck R mentioned. Other than being a little scary drilling two large holes in the bottom of my O'Day 25, it was pretty easy and works well. Make sure this is the FIRST thing you check when you launch, as mine leaked a little (not tight enough on the screw in speed transducer). Prior to this, I used a Humminbird fish finder with good results. I mounted the transducer in the bilge and made sure I poured half a gallon of water over it (nothing as fancy as PVC pipes and mineral oil, but it worked and I didn't have to haul the boat). Advantage is that it showed bottom structure and fish, but the ST40 has other nav functions such as discance travelled, etc.

obstruction problems?
musied, Wonder if you have had any debris problems obstructing the paddle wheel yet? And have you had to pull the speed unit out to clean? I'm thinking this would be a little scary exposing a two inch thru hull hole and relying on a check valve to stop incomming water. Chuck R

Chuck R - I've only had the boat in the water two weeks, and have not had a problem so far. When you pull the paddle wheel unit, there are a set of cups which are supposed to close and eliminate much of the incoming water until you can plug it with the supplied plastic plug. I too am not looking forward to this, and have a wooden plug as well as the raymarine plug handy if I do need to during our short sailing season. I did not put any anti-fouling paint on either of the transponders, so we'll see what happens.

If you are interested in depth only.....
.... you might want to first look into the depth sounders that don't involve penetrating the hull with a transducer feedthrough. Norcross makes one (the DF1120S) that has a transducer that can be glued in an area that is solid laminate (not cored) which shouldn't be a problem on your 22. The other feature of this unit that I like is that the display is remote from the control unit so you don't have to drill a giant hole in the bulkhead either, just one big enough to fit the cable through.
