All, I have an original equipment depth sounder and knot meter on my boat. The depth sounder frequently goes to decimal digits and once it does this it seems it takes forever for it to register normally. I have read the manual and it has said to adjust the gain to a different setting. Even this does not seem to resolve the problem most of the time. I also have checked the transducer to make sure it was not obstructed by some sort of growth. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve the problem? Next, although I rely on my GPS to give me an accurate speed, it would be nice if I could get the knot meter to work. All it displays is 0.0. I have checked the wheel on my hull and it moves freely. Does anyone have ay suggestions on where the problem may be?

It's time for a new sounder.

I contacted the Nav Instruments about the sounder in my boat, and they said they should be replaced every 10 years or so. I think the one in my boat was the original (21 years old). Ordered and installed the new one. As soon as it was in, it registered the correct depth immediately. The only tense moments occured during removal of the old sounder, and the time it took to slide the new one in its place. It must have taken only two seconds max, yet more than five gallons poured into the water tight compartment. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

That's my next repair.

I think I'll hold off on that one till the boat is hauled-out for the Winter. As it is, the GPS is far more accurate than the speed transducer, but if there's a speed transducer on the boat, it would be nice to have it work. Also, back when it was working, it did keep a log of the distance covered since its last reset, which is a nice feature. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

A haul out

Once it cools down around here, say maybe late September or October, I plan on hauling the boat out and redoing the bottom as well as waxing the hull. I'll probbaly replace the depth sounder and speed log at that time. I'd like to know though if there are replacements available that fit in the original binnacle mounts. Any suggestions?

Winter - This is ST Pete Florida Not Moscow

Our idea of a haul out for winter is finding our foul weather gear once a year to see if it still fits ;~) Brad

It depends on the original manufacturer

In my case, the NAV 5 was an add-on, and was not mounted at the binnacle. The main unit and readout are above the nav-station, and a remote readout is over the left window in the copckpit. If the company that made yours is still in business, you're in luck. They may have replacements that will fit. I hope you've kept the paperwork for your boat's equipment. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Guppies, I agree

with you. Its just too hot to do a haul out in July or August. During the summer in St. Pete, I would much rather be on the boat than under it.
