I have a 30 Catalina and need to replace the original depth sounder. Can anybody give me information, in detail, on replacing the whole unit from the bottom up. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Nicole

Fish Finder

This may not apply on a 30ft boat, but on my little C22 I ended up with a fish finder that did depth, temp, speed and found fish! Good Luck, Jay

For a very thorough discussion about this topic, check out our archives. I think many folks recommend a fishfinder mainly for the reasons Jay mentioned. I know that's going to be my next purchase since my DS seems to have bitten the dust for good! LaDonna

Depends on what you are going to use.

Nicole: It depends on what you are going to install. If you are looking for only a simple depth sounder it's a matter of pulling the boat and having the yard drill a hole in the hull. Run the wire to the display, hook up some power and it will work. Of course running the wires can be the most difficult part of the chore. If you want an integrated system you will need two transducers one for depth, one for speed and possibly a wind vane transducer on the mast.

No hole fish finder.

As LaDonna points out you will find all of this in the "Forum Archives". But many have had success with the depth sounder that uses a "glue-in" sensor or transponder. If you want log(speed) and temp as with a fishfinder then you will need a new hole in the boat.
