I was reading the thread about the speed logs and that got me thinking about replacing my rapidly failing combination depth sounder, speed log, temperature guage. The old one lasted 17 years and is no longer available or I would buy another. I was wondering what good and bad experiences you may have had with various depth sounders. I mostly just need the depth function since I can get speed from the GPS. I do not permanently mount the unit and temporarilly mount it on the cabin hatch each time I sail. Anyone used the puck transducer instead of transom mount? I found a Standard Horizon DS35 that looks interesting for about 100 bucks. Any feedback is appreciated.

NO,you cannot get boat speed from a gps. what you get is speed over the surface of the earth. the speedo gives you speed through the water. think airspeed and groundspeed in an airplane. if you are anchored in a ten knot current your gps shows 0 speed, your speedo ten knots - hardly the same on a sailboat.
