My boat was on the hard for 4 weeks, after bottom painted and put back to the water, the depth sounder show no reading (has a "MSD 1"). Any ideas what caused this? Thanks

Just a thought but did they paint the depth sounder as well? Can you pull it while in the water to check, I have a blank to swap when I do this. I always insert the blank before hauling to protect my traducer.

I'm guessing you have a blank for your speed transducer, but not your depth.

No, RuddyDuck is right. I have a spare for my sounder too.

My sounder is the in-hull type. The original through-hull sounder stop working when they paint over the transducer. Any way to check if the problem is with the transducer or the instrument? Thanks

Is your thru hull transducer set in epoxy or in a collar with water/antifreeze or oil?
If it's liquid it's possible it's leaked out. This happened to me where the silicone that joined the collar to the hull seperate after a knock something stowed in the same compartment. THe fluid leaked out. I reseated it added more fluid and was back in business.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out to see if I need to add more mineral oil.

Auto correct turned tri-ducer into traducer sorry. My tri-ducer has speed, depth and water temp.

The "MSD" reading indicates the unit has failed to receive a return echo. This usually means a board is shot. DMI in MA can fix it (+/-$175). Call Steve there and discuss. I had this same problem a few years ago, sent the unit to them, and it has worked perfectly since.

Very cool. I've never seen a removable depth sounder transducer, only speed.

Yea, and there is no baffle in it like the speed transducer. If you remove it a column of water about 1 1/2" in diameter will hit you square in the face. Ask me how I know. Won't be doing that again.
