Question: I sail on one of the finger lakes which goes to a depth of approximately 600'. I am considering purchasing a depth sounder/gauge so that I might anchor. Any suggestions on what would be the most appropriate instrument. I do not want a thru hull model? Thanks for any advice.

Ask the mfg.

Denis: Ask the mfg of the instruments that you are looking for about gluing the transducer inside the hull. As long as your hull is solid glass there should not be any problems. I used one like this for several years.

You can't be anchoring in 600'?

If you need the depth reading to help you navigate by knowing the depth, that is one consideration. But if you just want to see the depth where you will be anchoring, you don't need to be concerned about a depth range of 600' and most any depth finder will be sufficient.

I don't plan on anchoring in 600'. That would take more ancor line than I currently have. What i wanted to know is if there is an especially good depth meter - not through hull for a 29' Hunter.

surprising info

Many of the instruments you will see simialities. There are about 2-3 plants that make them under various brands. YOu can actually take a depth finder and adhere it to the hull. Suggest removing the gel coat and to get a flat surface. I know folks who use fast cure 4200 which is the little brother of 5200 sealant which is great stough. Make sure transducer is shoved into it and tape it down. Some use quick fast resin or epoxy. The big thing to remember is that you do not want any air between the instrument and the hull as it will defeat the reading. Another item is to install a puck style transducer which is different. You bond a circular wall in a sense to the hull and then add mineral oil to it which can be purchased at a drug store and then insert the transducer. I do not recommend the types that adhere to the back end of the transom. Crazy Dave Condon
