Hi all.

I have just purchased a hunter 27'

The boat is equipped with Standard Horizon depth and speed instruments.
neither work properly.

The depth sounder starts working at approximately 200' of water and seems to work ok as long as I stay in 200' or more depth. When experience less than that the depth sounder drops to approximately 11' and stays there.

The speed instrument does not work at all.
I checked both transducers before the boat was placed in the water.
Still no difference.

Anyone have or had this as a problem Standard Horizon instruments.

Im looking to do the repairs in the spring once the weather warms up.

Might be that the depth sounder is set to a high range. Do you know if yours can be set to a low range, like zero to 50'?

Yes I do have a range selector. I have moved the selector through the 3 ranges but with no different results.
I will be disconnecting the sensor in the spring and reconnecting to see if this makes a difference.

Check the voltage going into the unit for any abnormal value and also disconnect the cable going to the transducer and clean the terminals and reconnect. If voltage was OK and nothing changes it is probably toast. Go ahead a Google Standard Horizon repairs as some techs are still refurbishing these. I would not worry about the speed instrument as they get easily fouled and don't work half the time.

Yes Thanks for that.

The unit has a dial to change the ranges. The mechanical contact points may be oxidized.
I'm also going to try a couple of things to see if that is the problem. HOPE HOPE.

Here's how to make it work

To make this instrument read depth accurately at shallow depths, there is a simple, reliable procedure;
Remove instrument from bulkhead, and disconnect wiring.
Take a piece of 1/8" line, and mark indications on it for each foot of length.
You can use knots in the string, small cable ties, or other visible methods .

Tie piece of string to the power cable coming out of the sounder.
Toss it over the side, and note where the indictions are at the water surface.

In all seriousness, this is a relic, and running aground is no fun. You can pick up a used or new Raymarine St60+ (or similar) very inexpensively. It will be something you can depend non .
