Depth Meter Problems

I am looking for anyone who has had problems with their SR Mariner depth meter. Mine has not worked properly since I bought my boat second-hand (she's a Hunter Cherubini 1979). Currently, she is cradled in anticipation of the sailing season (whenever THAT reaches WI). Where do I start? Can it be properly diagnosed on the cradle? How do I know it is a problem with the transducer rather than the meter--there seems to be voltage going through the meter when I turn it on and off (a jump in the needle, but no true reading). Thanks for your help.

SR Mariner depth meter

The only problem I ever had with mone was after the yard painted over it with two coats of antifouling paint. It never worked right after that. SR is still in business and they really stand behind their product. Give them a call. You can find them on the internet.

This might seem a silly question, but you...

do realize the transducer will only read depth while in the water? I'm sure you knew that. Disconnect then reconnect the transducer from the head and see if that makes a difference. I do not know what the test measurement is to determine whether the transducer is good, but the maker will know. Hunter should know who they used and provide you with a contact number. I have that information on the boat, which will take a few days. This company makes transducers for most major marine instrument brands. Terry

Transducer query thanks

Terry-- Oh yeah, I think water is pretty much a needed element for a depth meter! Thanks for throwing that in (ya never know who knows what!). Short of being in the water, I am looking forward to your information and ways of testing it while on the cradle. I have been procrastinating for some time about this, but now I really do want to get it fixed correctly. At the moment, I have rigged a depth meter whose transducer is suspended just below the waterline off the transom and functions adequately, however--to quote Pink Floyd's Wall album in "The Trial"--This Will Not Do!!! I am somewhat of a purist and want my original equipment! Thanks again.
