I'm looking at adding a depth finder/sounder to my catalina 22. Has anyone found a good location to mount it so that won't interfere with the compass and still be visible from the back of the cockpit?

You might consider buying a fishfinder. There have been several discussions here about the merits of them and most folks seem to find them superior to standard depthfinders. LaDonna

I recommend the Apelco (Raytheon) L365 !
I had it on my other boat and it was great !!..It has a very large screen. It has multiple mounting options. I mounted it on top of my bulkhead to the left of the companionway entrance. When I left the boat for the week, I just disconnected the cables and stored it below I would definitely use it again. It is a Combination Depth/Speed/Trip log/Temperature & Fish finder. It can set in all sorts of modes. Another very nice feature of this unit (and I expect most fishfinders) is that is will graphically show the contours of the sea bottom. It is great to show what depth is trending (getting shallow...rocks below, soft bottom, etc) it really helps with coastal navigation because you can sometimes see unique structures from the graphing capabilities and possibly pinpoint your location while moving. Try the L265 if you don't care about the speed/temp, but I think it is a great all in one unit And even better is is cheaper than most single function depth sounders e.g Raytheon ST-60 (Depth only!) discounts for $430 while the L365 All In One (with transom mount trandsducer) discounts for $219 !!! ($399 for Bronze thru hull version) FYI -- My new boat has all all the ST-60 instruments and they work fine (too bad no graphics) -- but for an all in one unit --you can't beat the L365

Raytheon ST-60 Tri-Data System
I have a Tri-Data System installed on Nature's Cradle, but also use an Eagle Fishfinder, Transom Stanchion Mount starboard side of cockpit as well to reflect what bottom contours are like. Especially in new coastal areas or lake areas when water levels are low. Trans ducer is tiewrapped with medium duty cable ties to the rudder. Works very well. ( Black Cable Ties have a UV inhibitor so sunlight won't rot them away) Happy Sailing. Dave

Todd, Raytheon has come out just recently with a instrument series which is considerably cheaper than the "60" series. It is labeled the "St 40" series. I just purchase a ST 40 BI-data instrument. It is a Large face, depth and speed instrument that comes with both transducers included. Very accurate, easy to install ( you do have to drill 2 holes in bottom in fron of the keel) the cost is around $325 as opposed to $600 for the St-60 tridata.

Do these happen to have built in GPS navigation...I mean for 300-600 bucks they must have a lot of features.

Hi Todd............... I used to live in Newport News myself many moons ago. I spent $100 for my Humminbird fish/depth finder and it works great! My compass is mounted on the port cockpit bulkhead and the depth finder is mounted on the starboard bulkhead................. easy to see from the tiller. Also......... there are no holes to drill in the hull........... just epoxy the transducer down in the space forward of the keel ..... hook it up to your battery and your in business.
