I would like to add a depth finder to my 222. any sugestions? can I use a thru the hull puck or is a trans mount better?

To shoot thru the hull-------
I just completed my install.. Like Harley I used the thru hull model to shoot through the fiberglass hull.. I placed mine between the bulkhead and the 5 gallon water jug up in the bow. It is just to the port side of the center of the hull. The Uniden has a two part transducer, There is a shell ( outer plastic piece ) that you glue and make a well using silicone and also it makes a level base for the electronic transducer to shoot and receive straight down thru the hull. Make sure you create a water proof seal for the well and fill with anti-freeze or cooking oil. The "O" ring then seals the liquid when you place the transducer in the well. You can screw it together, but I just used black tape ( Gorilla Tape ) Works fine.. Supposed to be good for about 600 foot depth.

i would recommend a fish finder rather than just a depth finder...you will get bottom condition, mud or hard or junk and watch the fish go by. they also have depth warning alarms too.

That's a good point well taken, Bruce.
I would be more inclined to have a fish finder on my boat for that reason, plus the fact that I love to troll for fish when I'm out sailing in the bays. I have a friend who has a fish finder mounted in his sit on top kayak, which he uses for trolling for Stripers and Blues. Joe

Joe,, Fish finders are certainly effective, and I've seen them on most stink boats. Remember you have to sort out which ones are going to bite and then which fish are the good eating ones and have the large bones that makes them easy to fillet. The kind of fish finder needed gives size and gender, which fish are active, and tells you the ones that are sleeping. Once you have all the facts now you switch screens to determine color of the lure, size of hook and and speed of the retrieve. If by chance this sequence does not develop and no fish to be found you will need to turn on the side scan sonar to locate your schools of fish. You have only till three O' clock in the afternoon and Monday through Friday to do this. Once the powerboat has run all around and uses up all the gasoline he can afford scaring the fish all towards the quiet sailboat, we simply hang a line out and " Bam "! we got our fish. How do I know? Been there done that.

I think you're right about that Chuck! Maybe I ought to just forget about fish finders and just go on as I have been, by using the "element of surprise." By that I mean that when I'm trolling a lure and not paying attention, my dog Penny sees the pole bending and starts barking to let me know that there's a "fish on." This always gets me excited and I drop what I'm doing and grab the pole. As far as the type of fish I usually catch, goes, I either catch Blues or Stripers and mostly Blues. I've learned to acquire a taste for Blue Fish and not by choice. Smooth Sailing! Joe
