Depth Finder

I'm looking for a good depth finder for my Cat 22. Whatever was there before was removed by the PO. I would prefer one that does not require a hole in the hull. I sail exclusively on an inland lake, if that matters. I don't need the cheapest one, but don't want to spend a bundle.

There are several on West Marine's web site, but I don't know how "good" of a finder I need. Any recommendations?

FWIW, I've installed a HawkEye D10D with a shoot-thru-the-hull transducer, about $100.00 from Defender. If your hull isn't cored with wood or whatever, it could work for you.

I did drill a 2-inch hole in the cabin bulkhead to mount the display.

I bedded my Ray Marine DS in silicone, shooting thru the hull in my 30 Catalina. It works very well, as did the same installation in my Cat 22.

I can't remember the manufacture, but on our Capri-18 I had a depth sounder that would read down to 600'. Yes a HUGE overkill, but it was fun while out in the ocean and it would read all zero's because the depth was over 600', then it would start to show the depth decline as we sailed over the top of an underwater mountain. It was also useful to make sure we stayed in water over 100' to avoid the kelp forrest canopy. I epoyied the transducer in the bottom of the hull and worked great. Reminds me I need to install one on our C-22 someday before I run aground.

Hey s/v Sweet Laraine, we bought our first C-22 from a yard on the South River road on the Clinton River years ago, and my brother-in-law had their C-30,("Sparky") on the Clinton River years ago. Great area, and looking forward to returning for some sailing again in the area after I retire.

DanKo, When my main sounder went out, I temporarily stuck a fish finder transducer to the inside of the hull beneath the v-berth with silicone. That was over 10yrs ago and it still works as both fish-finder and backup depth sounder. Be sure to press out ALL air bubbles in whatever you use to stick the sounder to the inside of the hull. The bubbles could effect readings. The Preferred adhesive would be Epoxy as it maintains the same density as your hull.
