The NavSounder on our 1987 Hunter 37 has taken to reading 199.00 feet at odd times. We then give it 5 minutes or so, and most of the time it returns to giving a correct reading. Sometimes it does its' thing at the wrong time. Does anyone have insight about this situation?

I have the same boat & electronics & had

the same problem. I disconnected EVERY contact and cleaned them. Incorrect readings are sometomes caused by insufficient voltage to the instrument (corroded contacts). Didn't work. Listened to the transducer for a ping indidcating it was working. Heard ping, instrument didn't work. Cleaned bottom or transducer to remove external fouling. Still didn't work. End of the rope for me with diagnostic/repair. Finally replaced with Raytheon ST60 purchased at boat show for $303. Rationialized that repair cost for outdated instrument wasn't worth it. Good decision.... Now I know how deep the water is...

Are you working for Hewlett Packard? Are you anywhere near Annapolis? It may be a fluke, but for the same boat and the same problem, and for you to work fo HP (as does my wife). Will look forward to your reply.

Sorry John.....

I,m not employed by HP. The hp was supposed to be my Home Port that I haven't filled in. Actually, I'm in the NY area with most of my sailing done on Long Island Sound. Also, I started having depth sounder problems about 2 years ago but was unable to get it to work properly.... so I went into replace mode.

You can change that silly [hp] thing by going to nay main forum menu. by the home port field you'll see a link that says 'Change how your home port is displayed.' Just wipe that out and click submit. It should then be blank.
