If I were using a lap top hooked to a GPS for navigation, would it be possible to get the computer to display depth (as read from a transducer)? How would I do this?? Thanks a lot!

It depends on the language spoken by the transducer. GPS is NMEA 182 sentences. If the transducer speaks the same language you should be good to go. Check with the manufacture and see how the data is sent. Some systems will allow you to interface with a PC or other devices. Does yous? Mine does not.
Check out the OpenCPN forums, there's a fair amount of discussion about getting NMEA into your laptop chart plotter.

Quick edit: Most options for getting NMEA out of a depth sounder are expensive or involve conversion of proprietary standards.
