I am looking at a 1987 Hunter 37.5 Legend to purchase. The surveyor noticed a depression on the starboard side of the hull, mid hull and about two foot below the water line. The depression was around two foot in diameter. It went in about an inch, The surveyor said the hull was sound in thah area and maybe the dent was caused by a jack stand. Any input from all you experts? Thanks Norm

Very Likely a jack stand

When a boat is out of the water and on the hard, it will commonly conform to the shape of the applied pressure on the hull where it recieves pressure, such as a jack stand. When the boat is launched and then cradled by the water, many depressions disappear because of the even pressure of the water against the hull, as well as the water temp rising against the fiberglass. I would go with the surveyor's opinion unless there is no jack stand in the area if the depression. IMHO, that is when I'd be concerned. We (admiral and myself) sail a '88 Legend 37 (1987 - 1989) and have had it for 15 years and thoroughly love it. It is a very durable and seaworthy boat.

Depression happens

Paul is right about the jack stand. Wouldn't worry too much.

Sometime they do sometime they don't

Some time these depressions will "pop" back out sometime they won't. This is usually because the boat was not resting on its keel when on the hard (pad too high) or the boat was leaning on one side putting pressure on a particular pad (one pad lower then the other or pads not at the same locationfrom one side to the other). If you lift the boat and it come back exellent, if it doesn't you can try a light rubber hammer and hammer on the perimetre of the depression, if that doesn't do it you can try, on a cold day, a heater right where the depression is; the temperature difference might force it to pop. If not well you're taking more of a chance. My 2ø a.
