I have a 84 Hunter 27. There is a 2" deep depression or recessed basin in the cabin sole, just underneath where the fire ext. mounts. There is also a small 1/8" hole in the bottom that might be a drain???. I am curious. I am sure there is a reason for this little basin, but it escapes me.

Not in my '77 h27

Sounds like the depression may be specific (a defect) in your boat. If so, it would be logical to drill a hole in it to drain the water into the bilge. David Lady Lillie

not a defect

Not a defect. It is in the mold w/ perfect radius's and smooth gel coat. It's a very finished look.

Where in the cabin?

Dan Is that 'basin' on the port side, under the chart table? That's where it is in our '82 27 and ours has a large fire extinguisher bungeed in there. I always thought that's what it was designed to hold! You mention it's under where the fire extinguisher mounts, but I don't have a "mounted" extinguisher there under the chart table. This large extinguisher sits right in that little basin. If we can't figure this out, I'll go to the boat and take a picture and send it back on this post. Take care, Ron

Ron you may be right

Yes, the basin is directly below the fire ext. You could be right, that the original ext. nested down into the basin. My ext. is mounted about 4" above this basin. I think you solved my mystery. Thanks Dan

The hole is for drainage.

The depression is to allow for a larger fire extinguisher to be mounted. But since we all buy the cheap ones we end up with an empty space there. The small hole is just so that water can return to the bilge when the boat heels excesively.
