We pushed up our departure from Mission Bay the other morning, when the forecast called for larger swell on the leading edge of the low. The jetty is about 300 yards wide. The wind was right on the nose and the swell inside the jetty, I estimated at about 12-15 feet. We didnt think to turn the camera on until we were almost clear. First mate was a bit excited but she didnt leave her station. Come on little yanmar, dont fail me now! Cheers

Cool!

I didn't see anything like that leaving San Diego Bay in September. Matter of fact, my deck hardly got wet until I got to SF Bay.

Glad I got some on video

Thanks Bay Sailor, That swell isnt too bad when you have sea room, but in the jetty it was pretty fun. You realize once again that sailboats are tough little son of a guns! Cheers

the other way is more fun!

we have a few days like that each year. west swell directly into the channel at low tide you'll get some breakers. Usually when it's real bad the lifeguard boat will be posted near by.. On really big days the surge will reach quivera basin, where all the marinas are and roll things a bit...but that's rare. What's really wild is coming back in .... surf city!!! Sometimes conditions will warrant closing Mission Bay entrance and re directing to San Diego bay, 5 miles south, which is all weather....that's why the Navy's there.
