Deltas Hold

Nice N Easy

Just thought I would post this information. Shortly before leaving Ct. and heading south, I thought maybe I should get a better anchor for the boat than the two Danforths it had on board. Mostly because they don't do very well in grass, and we were heading south. Ended up buying a 22# Delta, which is one size over what they say this boat should have. Last night the forecast was wrong, and instead of winds from the west, we had strong southerly breezes, like gusts to 40 knots, and were exposed to the worst of the swell coming up Chesapeak bay. This morning, when ready to leave, I found that I had also managed to misread the rode markers in the semi darkness when anchoring up last night. Instead of having out 80', only had out 30. High tide last night we were in approx. 12 to 15' of water. The Delta never budged. It was a sandy bottom, with good holding, but two or three to one scope, and still holding. What do you say.

They Do Hold

Our 44# Delta has held in everything except for a shale/smooth rock bottom in the Little Shark River, FL. We have used 3 to 1 scope when things are tight and have never drug. Great anchor... but the previous CQR never drug either. Bill

Reliability

I carry a 35 lb cqr and it will set on the fly. We lost control of the boat because of a jambed halyard and dropped the anchor while moving about four knots, when I snubbed the rode the boat stopped. Had friends that weather a hurricane in Marathon, Florida. She said that the delta had dug in about five feet in the soft bottom around the Keys.

Not Yet

John, We literally got beat to death last night, and started off this morning in a drizzle, that looked to turn to snow at any minute. Decided not to continue in that after the night we had so just found a hidey hole and anchored up. About ten miles north of Annopolis. Going to get an early start tomorrow I hope. Can't wait to get far enough south to take off some of these clothes.

late start

Take heart! tonight and tomorrow will be the worst of the cold for a while. Sunday through wednesday forcast is for highs in the mid to upper fifties and night time lows in the thirties. When we bought Bietzpadlin the sunday after thanksgiving, in Havre de Grace, Md I had to kick the ice and snow off the deck to get a good look at her. And the temps didn't get above freezing until January. God Speed Ross in Bel Air

the rest of the equation?

Interesting accounts relating anchoring experiences, but it's important to understand not only the size/type of the anchor and the velocity of the wind, but the size/displacement of the vessel. The primary anchor on my Morgan 382 (18,000lbs) is a Delta 35. I particularly like the way the Delta sets... I haven't missed one yet. Better in my experiences than CQR and Danforths.

Delta Anchor

I did the exact same thing with the same results. My Cal33 came with 2 Danforth anchors and I wanted something different. Got a 22 lb Delta and it works out great. The boat weighs 10800 lbs. plus and never a problem but I was not tested like you were.
