I have a 1987 Catalina 36. I am considering an anchor change. I currently have a Danforth 22S with a 20' chain/200' nylon rode. I think I want to try a Delta Deep Set 22 with the same type rode, or perhaps one with perhaps 50' of chain. Would like to hear from other 36's who may be using this anchor. I sail predominately in the Middle Chesapeake Bay and lower Potomac River. Thanks

Get the next size up

I feel the Delta 22 is too small for your boat. Get the next size, I think that would be about 35 lbs. It will look big in the store, but not when you get it on your anchor roller. Roc

I agree

When I first bought my C36, the previous owner had a 22lb. danforth with 15 ft. of chain and a 100 ft. rode. It worked OK when anchored in protected areas and areas where tidal current wasnt too bad. I had several instances where it dragged due to tides or brisk winds. I replaced this setup with a 33lb. bruce, 25ft. of 3/8" HT chain and a 200 ft. rode. This has never dragged... Once I anchored first and 6 other boats rafted up to me - no dragging at all. It may be heavier, but it sure gives me peace of mind! I kept the danforth package as a secondary anchor. I'm in Galveston Bay which is basically a mud bottom - much the same as the Chesapeake, I think. It is shallow - I'm usually anchored in 10-12 ft. of water with a scope of 5:1 or more as measured from the bow to the bottom.

I never used it on a 36, or in the Chesapeake, but in my opinion it is a far superior anchor for mud because it is much easier to set and less sensitive once hooked. I agree - go one size up and add as much chain as your bow will carry.

Delta

I have a C-36 MK II with a Delta 35 and 30 feet of chain and 250 feet of rode. Works great so far.

Anchors

I had a 36 foot Catalina with a danforth anchor that I was not really happy with. It stored badly on deck and it drug once on me. My new boat (380) came with a Bruce 35....WOW, I am really impressed. Although the boat is on the upper limit for that size Bruce, it has really served me well. I have had two real strong windy nights on it and I slep well. Gary

Bigger is better...

I used a 22# on my C28. When we took delivery, I moved to a Delta 35# with 50' of chain and a 200' nylon rode. Works great. I did have to a the bale over the over enlarged to accomodate the larger anchor though. I still use the 22# when a second anchor is warranted. I sleep better with the 35# too!

Danforth

As I agree with most that the bigger the better, I disagree about the Danforth. I used a Danforth 22# on my C36 as that is what the boat came with. I too was worried that it was not large enough so I bought a new 35 # CQR for serious occasions. I came to trust my Danforth so much that that is usually the only anchor on the boat. Only had trouble one time, wind was strong and I believe the bottom was grass. Once set it held wonderfuly. The Danforth rates better for weight than just about any other anchor I believe. It's just touchy about grassy bottoms.

My 2 Bits -- 44lb SPADE -- New type of anchor

That's kind of like a "concave" plow anchor (as opposed to convex). I got it new late this fall (its not cheap) so I can't be sure how well it will hold up. But it has gotten very high ratings by some publications and individuals...... I just love the fact that its a 'little' oversized. I have the 36 MKII with a windlass so no big deal.....I have about 20 or 30 feet of chain and 150' of 1/2" rode.........I will keep the 22# danforth as a spare in the forward anchor locker I think I will sleep well next summer....... ps if I was going to get any other anchors they would be the Delta or CQR 35# or bigger. Which should do well

Upsize

My 1985 C36 came with a 35lb Bruce, 80' of 5/16" chain and 300'of 3/4" rode. (The previous owner believed in upsizing everything, my primary winches are #48 self tailers!). I have anchored in some kinda nasty conditions, and have never dragged. I have heard, however, that the Bruce is almost useless on a grass bottom, and carry a Danforth as a backup for just those conditions.

44# on roller?

I have an 1986 C-36 with the stock 22 something # danforth with the stock toy rollers. I have a 44# Bruce that I am considering mounting on a new roller. I am a little concerned it will be too big, but may look into installing a windless also to help haul it up. I prefer oversized ground tackle, but the 44# may be overkill. But since I already have it, I'd rather not spend the cash on a 35lb CQR which seems about perfect. Anyone have a 40+# plow mounted on a roller in this boat size range? Thanks for any comments, Trevor

Trevor, Absolutely !! I have 44# on mine today.

Read my post earlier. I have the 44# Spade (Kind of an inverted plow) I like the extra weight also. The existing roller seems plenty sturdy enough though the curve in the shank of the anchor makes so the anchor doesn't fit as well as I like....Id rather have one of those the anchor rollers that are offset, maybe I'll bring it to a metal fabricator this winter and see what he can do. I beleive my roller is a Windline CR2 (straight model) that came with the boat (1999 Cat 36MKII)

Delta Deepset

We bought our 93 C36 new, so I chose the anchor components. I went with the 16 kg Bruce, 30' of high test 1/4" chain, and 200' of 1/2" nylon. I have never had this anchor drag, even when having a C42 rafted for the night. I don't know if I have ever anchored in a grassy bottom. As a alternate anchor I also carry a Fortress 16 lb. with 25' of 5/16 proof chain. The only change I would make would be to add another 20' of chain. I have used the Delta (35 lbs.) on a Caliber 40 with all chain rode, 3/8" I believe, and I am not impressed. I wouldn't use one on my boat!

Delta 22

We're on our second Delta 22. Our first is firmly anchored (probably, still) in White Lake at Whitehall on Lake Michigan. That baby is stuck fast, we called the West Marine store at the next port (Muskegon) and Rand had one all set up for us and delivered to the Marina where we were going to slip for the night. Other than that, we really have had no problems with the Delta 22. It has held tight and works well in all conditions that we face in the Great Lakes Basin. We keep a Danforth as a secondary, but rely on the Delta.
