Wasn’t I just here, the last time I left Hampton Roads? Yes, I’m back on the beautiful Chickahominy River on a beautiful calm morning with the rising sun lighting up the surface mist drifting in the marsh coves.

My desire for a long rousing sail, something I hadn’t done in months, caused me to shortchange this beautiful area a couple weeks ago and I ran back to Hampton after just anchoring overnight. The memory made it seem worth the forty odd mile run up from Portsmouth yesterday so I plan to do it justice this time. I’m also taking pictures which I’ll post tonight.

I saw a half dozen or more eagles last time and there are Ospreys everywhere this morning. I just heard a commotion and looked out to see two of them flying around grappling at each other in the air. They quickly lost control and crashed together into the water where they floated in a face off. One had its wings spread wide and the other’s were folded. After about a minute, the one with the spread wings thrashed its way into the air and flew off. Osprey language for “Uncle”? The other flew up into the top of a tree.

I guess the sap is running.

Enjoy the day or 2! It looks like a storm is coming your way by Friday.

We watched a pair of eagles chasing off a large hawk on kayak trip on the Delaware a few years ago. We also saw another eagle thrashing in the water, only to emerge with an eel. They must like to protect their hunting grounds.

I'm having lunch the head of navigation on the Chickahominy. High bluffs, deep water, extensive marshes and cypress swamps, eagles – this is definitely the most interesting and beautiful place I’ve found in the Chesapeake area. It also makes the list of favorites for the whole east coast.

I've never seen an Osprey sitting on the surface of the water. How do they look? Like ducks or what? Would have made a great picture.
