Help! I am starting to remove my Perkins 4-108 from my 81 center cockpit 37 ft Oday. It looks real tight for my first plan of trying to slide it through the hatch leading into the rear cabin. So now I am wondering if the more proper procedure is to remove the helm and remove the cockpit sole. ??? I have other work to do in there so maybe this is easier. tanx, people; hope someone can help!!...Dick

I removed the Westerbeke 4-108 from my Pearson 365. Removal of the cockpit sole was recommended. Glad I didn't do it. I removed the exhaust manifold, the starter and even a couple of the engine mounts which gave the engine a more slender profile. Getting it to slide out into the cabin was then manageable. Was able to use the raised end of the boom with a come along (or boom vang blocks etc) attached to bring the engine up and swung the boom over to the gangway to a cart.

I'm uncertain of the similarities between the 37 and the 39, but prior to my purchase the engine was removed for a re-build, the cockpit sole was not touched. It was also done by a yard, so I'm certain that they used some small crane to haul it up through the companion way. Good luck!! Not a job that I would like to tackle.

has the same layout as a 37, do not cut the cockpit sole!! I had to repair my cockpit sole last spring because all the wood under the fiberglass was rotted and I thought I was going to cut it out and replace the wood from above I'm glad I looked over the job cause I was able to replace every thing from below (a tough job) but then I did not have to figure out how to resupport the cockpit sole had I cut it. now to your problem I also looked over how I would remove my Westerbeke 4/90 and thought maybe the rear cabin, but you have to protect the shaft log and shaft with a platform and slide the engine to the port side and out on this platform that would extend past the opening,then can it fit out the hatch above?? The other way I looked at mine was to take the galley apart(front of cabinet where stairs are) and slide it out through the foward cabin which has a larger hatch opening and you don't have to shift the engine to either side and all this would be done with as much of the engine stuff off that can be removed easy enough to trim it down.

Ours is an '82 O'Day 37 CC. The Universal engine had a bad oil leak through the gearcase at the front and engine had to be removed. Yard did it through the aft cabin. Had to remove the sill at the bottom of the engine room entrance but other than that seemed to have no other structural problems. Put it back the same way. Overall, with new parts, the job ran $6,000. Following a fire that required reconstruction of the galley area, we installed two 4D batteries, again done by the yard. It's a beautiful installation but I am wondering about how I get them out of there when they eventually die.
