I have a 9.9 Yamaha outboard on my 27 Catalina and do weekend trips. I need to repalce the batteries(2 in parallel) and want to know if batteries are batteries? Thanks Gary

The only reason to use other than deep cycle on a boat is for the batts to be able to stand the high amperage drain on starting the auxiliary. That may be a concern on a big inboard, but your little 9.9 could probably be started with enough D flashlight batteries in series. I've always used group 24 deep cycles to start my 15hp on my 27.

My c27 is equipped with 2 group 27 deep cycle wet cell batteries that I purchased from Costco. They are rated at 115 amp hours, I think. I keep them charged with a truecharge 10 amp smart charger that is hardwired to the shore power system. You don't really need a dedicated starting battery with the 10 hp yamaha, so just purchase the deep cycle type. I got about 36/42 months service out of the previous set of costco batteries (they're rated at 30 mos.) Before that I had 2 gel type, no mainenance, batteries that lasted 7/8 years. They were so expensive to replace.... 225 bucks apiece... that I decided to try the 65 dollar costos and it worked out okay. All the major auto stores sell marine batteries... sears, pep boys, sam's, etc. To answer your question. Get only marine rated deep cycle batteries. Read the west advisor Stu so kindly linked for you.
