Decorating the Bulkhead

I've been thinking about spring projects and one thing I would like to do is spruce up the forward bulkhead in my boat to make things cozier.

I was thinking of adding either:
- teak magazine/book rack
-brass clock and thermometer
-photos/artwork
-guitar

Or any combination of these

I would love to see pictures or hear ideas of what everyone else has done.

Excellent choice. I'm usually a "form follows function" kinda guy, so the atmospherical/chronological data thingies you suggested could work.

Pressure's rising.

Beautiful area you've got there.

While they look shippy and all, the clock and barometer never worked on my boat. Besides I have an app for that stuff. I'd go with something else.
I'd vote for a book rack.

Nooo! Don't start nailing. Look at that teak it's gorgeous. Why would anyone want to nail junk over it? Maybe brass instruments, one or so more than you already have. At least they would be acceptably nautical and usable while being small and not too invasive. However, I'd put even good instruments elsewhere for appearance. Not on the teak and mahogany.

A shame to cover up too much of your beautiful teak. Maybe a framed line drawling of your boat..not too large.
Scott, love the homey table lamp!
Disco ball sure to be a hit hung from the mast in anchorages.

I will pile into the minimalist camp on covering your bulkheads, they really do look nice!
If not necessarily hanging something ON them, perhaps something near and not attached. Or the 3M strips that won't damage surfaces to hang a small piece of art.

When I took over Raven she had a teak framed mirror, a clock and a barometer on the bulkhead. The mirror made no sense at all so I moved it to the head side and kept the instruments. I later added a bulkhead mounted heater. These are all functional items and deserve a place. The only permanently mounted item I have that doesn't serve a purpose is a half model of the boat. I suppose a framed picture or line drawing of the vessel would be acceptable as well but a half model adds a lot of class. I can' t imagine any random art work that would deserve a place on a fine teak bulkhead. I do have some fun stuff kicking around the boat but it is not permanently attached, Steve.

The mirror would probably give a more open feeling but nice framed chart of your sailing area would add function to the artwork.

Sorry to chime in again. But a sailboat is not an RV.

Wood is the beauty. Wood is the boat.

When you start nailing, you start covering the spirit of the boat. You are removing the essence of her creators, and replacing with nonsense.

She is a creation, an entity, and a seagoing creature. Do not deface her.

There's already a couple of screw holes... so don't sweat it. Here's two versions on my boat... The TV is on a swing out bracket... got to have my football if I'm not sailing.

Thanks Joe, I was going to say flat-screen but I tried to keep it nautical. However I did look up Parry Sound and now suggest one big honking wood stove.

I dont believe in decorating the boat so much as I do in making every spare inch of it functional... but, when making it functional, do it with a bit of class so the end results look good. good craftsmanship is a decoration in and of itself....

so first you need to figure out what you need there... if its not a need, then leave it alone. the need will come along someday for some bulkhead space, and there it will be...
