Hey gang! My wife and I are looking at a 1984 Hunter that needs some TLC. Pretty much all the teak on the deck has seen better days. We need to place the handrails. My wife would like to put in Companionway doors, but at the minimum we need to replace the hatch boards. Also the Handrails and the two strips of teak that run along where the companionway hatch slides. Where would I find replacement parts? Thanks, Jeremy

I replaced one of my handrails on my 25.5. I bought the replacement piece at West Marine. I've also refinished the salon deck a couple of times in the last 10 years that I've owned her. If the plywood is not delaminated you should be able to refinish it.

Scott thanks for your reply! The salon floor appeared to be in good shape. Its the two pieces that hold the sliding companionway "hatch" I am not sure what it's called. The roof part of the companionway that sides open has two pieces of teak that hold it in its track. They are both shot. I am sure I could just have someone cut some teak to those specs. Jeremy

uploadjoe - My wife and I are refinishing / replacing the teak on our 1980 Catalina 25. We bought replacement handrails at West Marine, as also mentioned by Scott. Our companionway slides (I believe they are called "railwoods") are shot too, so I looked into getting a couple of teak pieces to cut new ones from. WM has some that could be used, for about $88 each. I checked a local lumber yard, the only one I could find that has teak, and it would have cost me $197 JUST FOR THE RAW WOOD! I contacted Catalina, who said they can no longer make these parts because they lost the patterns in an earthquake. Called Catalina Direct, who had also lost their patterns, but could make new ones if I sent them my old ones to be used as templates. In addition to saving myself the labor, they quoted me only $55 each plus shipping. Since this seemed low, I actually called them three different times to confirm this quote. Should have the new ones in a few weeks! Jack

We have a h23 and I replaced all the teak hand rails and slides as well as installed slats over the fuel locker to enlose it. I went with buying raw wood and then planed it down and ripped it to what I wanted. I was very careful in getting the most out of my board and it was $155.00. This allowed me to make some things heavier duty and I was able to route the edges and make it a little bit nicer. It sounds like the replacement parts were pretty good priced. Enjoy the boat! Treaking Teak?
Sorry for the total newbie question, but I am guessing the teak comes unfinished. What is the general process one uses to treat teak? On a side note I am a total newbie to boats is there any resource on general maintence and up keep on a sailboat? I know I will learn as I go. I'd just like to avoid any costly pitfalls along the way. Thanks! -- Jeremy
