Deck repaint - Non-skid - Help

Hello kind forum folk,

Been completing some pretty big, by my estimation, projects on our new to us Catalina 30. Something I plan to tackle at the end of the sailing season is our decks. As you can see from the photos our deck is rather well worn in places and the look of it drives me nuts. So what say you my knowledgeable forum posters? I've looked into KiwiGrip and it looks like a good product. Any other ideas? I'd love to hear from someone that has actually done this project.

I love the easiness and durability of interdeck, tape apply and be done. Touch up are easy and grip is good. Very cost effective, done my old boat 4 year ago and it still looks good

I use KiwiGrip on decks, and it is on mine. Love the stuff. A man can put it on stone drunk. Ordered it right here from this site. TOO easy..

Oh, and I thought it odd that the worn parts are turning blue?

Not turning blue but wearing down to the blue layer underneath I'd guess.

All that is is wearing through the gel coat into glass. After stepping on it forty thousand times that is typical. You could re-gel oat it, but the KiwiGrip has WAY more traction. And I walk on it barefooted, it ain't that aggressive..

Read their instructions and it will be pretty easy. Water based makes it easy to tint and easy to clean up.

Try to put up a tarp for shade. Hot sun will dry it too fast. High humidity slows dry time which is a good thing. Think about how you tape off the edges so removing as you go will be simple and easy.

As with the responses on this thread, KiwiGrip ALWAYS gets the thumbs up when the topic of painting non-skid comes up. I have no experience with it -- so I can't add or detract.

But as a variation, look at my information from this thread in 2009 about using 2-part Interlux Perfection, mixed with Interlux's flattening agent to reduce the gloss and with their non-skid additive "added".

Now in 2014, five years on after the painting of my then 29 year-old non skid deck, and after several hundred sails and just as many times walking around on the deck when the boat is berthed, the surface condition is virtually as good as the day I painted it. And virtually the same appearance as a new boat's gelcoat. Granted Interlux Perfection plus the flattening agent will be more expensive. Interlux's special thinner also should be on hand. And a bit more care will be needed for the application.

I've used Interlux Interdeck for years. Effective, simpleto apply and to re touch.

I avoided using Kiwigrip because I heard on the forum that Kiwigrip is difficult to keep clean. I am in the middle of painting the nonslip on my 1978 C25. I am using Tredgrip.
I have used it before in the mid 1980s it works well but I think the Kiwigrip possibly has a smaller lower profile. Time will tell.

I used EZ Decks from Pettit Marine Paints: http://www.pettitpaint.com/product.asp?id=217 on my Hunter 28. It was easy to apply, looks awesome, and after three years it isn't showing any fading or wear.

Eileen, who married me 44 years ago, does the painting chores on deck and the Cetol on the woodwork. Her reminder is: The taping around the area to be painted is one key concern. Do it well and it will help your paint job will look professional. Do the taping haphazardly and any paint will come up looking bad. On several boats we have applied Interlux after adding the non-skin material. Very satisfied.

I used Kiwi grip 2 seasons ago on our 1968 Pearson 35 and have been very pleased with the results. I had it tinted at our local Sherwin-Williams store and it looks great. It filled all the crazing and has been no problem to keep clean. Did the whole boat in an afternoon. And it all cleaned up with water.

7 years ago my wife painted our deck with Interlux Brightside using Interlux' non skid additive. It was a lot of work but the result is a still fresh looking deck. The only trouble areas were where a automotive fiberglass man applied some primer that he said would work with anything. It didn't.

I use a product that is washed silica sand. (Not crushed!) One coat of paint, shake on the anti-slip and 2 finish paint coats over top.
Pictures are of the winch holder/ step on the Siren 17 (Bigger) and the step for inside the Mac 26D.
First is after anti-slip is applied, The product I use, before anti-slip.
I used MinWax Marine varnish. 4 coats then anti-slip and another 4 coats. (I was doing other wood pieces and though.. why not another coat on each...)
Note: You can see each grain of silica is the same with no cracks in it. Kind of like table salt.
