Hi Rex,

We refinished Lealea's deck with Awlgrip five or six years ago. Its pretty straightforward really. Prior planning will make the job go more smoothly (When we did it, we ran out of polymer beeads and Laura had to dash to the West Marine store for another can before the paint kicked off).

Mask off the non-skid areas carefully.

Divide the deck in to at least six small areas to be painted one at a time. Prep the surface by thoroughly cleaning and sanding where necessary. It is not necessary to sand off the molded in texture of the deck. It will not show after you have completed the following.

Wipe down with denatured alcohol, twice, just prior to painting.

Mix paint, reducer and catalyst according to directions on the can and lay on with a roller.

Sprinkle a generous layer of the polymer beads on the wet paint. The beads are the consistency of granulated sugar so you will not want to do this in windy conditions. Make sure to use plenty of the beads the first time around. If you are too miserly with the beads the surface will not be evenly covered and will have shiny (Slippery) spots. Use plenty and you will get a nice even matte finish with excellent non-skid properties.

When the paint kicks off you can brush or vacuum up the excess non-skid and use it on the next section.

At this stage your deck ahould look like it has a nice even dusting of sugar on the non-skid areas. Let the paint cure for the recomminded time.

Using a roller, apply two coats of paint over the polymer beads to seal, following the directions for cure time.

Remove masking, open a beer and bask in the admiration of your neighbors.

We followed the manufacturers directions scrupulously but found that we needed more polymer beads than recommended.

Good Luck,

Chuck
