In Nov. I purchase a 1980 Hunter 27. The boat has a old pale blue/gray paint job on selected areas like anchor locker top of opening etc. The surveyor said he thinks it was done long ago to freshen up the looks. I want to redo the paint job in the spring with an off white of very light tan something not so bright. Has anyone painted the top deck? What products are best? What is the best way to pre the site? I am new to sailing so any other helpful hints about the h27 are welcome.

i did my 30

i did mine last year and it came out real nice!, i used interlux bright side with their grit additive, the guy at west marine recommended i sprinkle on the grit over the wet paint, what a mistake, i took the first section back down and did the deck with the grit mixed in the paint the way interlux recommends, worked great! i just sanded down the old nonskid, taped (with 3m blue) and rolled on. got a lot of compliments this summer, bty; which yard are you at? regards, mike

Several sailors

In my marina painted the decks with Ace water based porch enamel with sand added,to the first coat, three seasons and still totally intact. Many will say if it's not marine it wont work, but I have seen it!!

I am in Crowley yard. Put in an application for a mooring hopefully in Monroe harbor. Thanks for the reply I will check out the West Marine store. Where is the store located?

I did it a few years ago

I had an '82 Hunter 27 (I now have a 29.5). Loved that boat! I know what you mean about the paint...I had the exact same finish. What I did was to buy 4 qts of Interlux Brightsides Urethane (battleship grey)...mixed in some Interlux anti skid and painted the whole topsides. It was a pain because I did all this in 90+ degree weather, so I ended up with a lot of blistering and thus post-paint work, however, when I was finished, it really looked nice. In retrospect, I probably would not have chosen such a dark shade of grey (got REALLY hot in the sun), but I got a lot of compliments. As with any painting job, the key is preparation. Interlux makes a great paint for topsides. I'd be more than happy to forward some pics (they don't seem to want to upload on this site)...just let me know. Good luck...

You can also use gelcoat.

You can also redo your non-skid with the original product. You can buy rollable/ paintable gelcoat. You can color it too. It rolls on like a two part paint and they have a thicken that gives the finish small peaks to create a non-skid finish. The gelcoat comes with the wax in the container so there is not much to do except add the catalyst and color if you do not want white.

Did my 27

essentially the same way as mike. However I used Interlux primer before painting. My 27 has off white gelcoat and I found that Interlux Hattaras white is a pretty good match. I added 4 ml of black to each quart which gave a nice very pale gray without it apprearing blue as it does when you add black to the white paint Be glad to give you further info if you like, my email address is on the list.

Contact Jim Willis at Island Girl.

Larry: Jim Willis has a contact in Santa Cruz that sells the rollable, paintable gelcoat. My friend purchased his from somewhere on the east coast. They sell the product with the wax included in the mixture.
