I am undertaking reainting my decks this winter, for the first time since buying the boat. Mostly it is a dark blue color. I'm unfamiliar with the differences in shine when actually used, and not simply the look on the color cards, between different lines of paint (I'm talking about polyurethanes and enamels and differences between them, e.g. all the interlux lines). How about the gloss level? I don't think I want a matte finish because some gloss is needed to get a nice deep color; or am I wrong on this? Recommendations appreciated too.

Car Paint?

I'm considering spraying my decks with 2-part, single stage urethane automotive paint on top of an epoxy primer. (is there a difference, marine urethanes to non-marine?) Paint tends to lose its gloss over time, so I can't see starting with a matte color. Even a plain white surface looks better glossy.

Stick w/ Interlux

We are also repaint the deck and non-skid surfaces. From the experience of fellow boaters in the yard who have repainted, stick with Interlux. The new finishes they have developed are easy to roll on the deck. I was amazed at the quality of the deck and non-skid surface paint. Interlux offers a CD of their products. The customer service is top notch.

We are doing it now

We are heavily into it. For the past three weekends, we have stripped the deck of all the old paint. This weekend we are taking out the old portlights to ready them for new ports. We are going to use Awlgrip epoxy primer. For the topcoat, we are using devane two part urethane paint from Dulux. We have used it on two boat hulls with excellent results. The stuff is practically bulletproof. And it costs half the price of "marine" paints.

OK SOUNDS GOOD, Dulux from where?

ok I like saving money, where do you get the Dulux product, why not Dulux primer? Is the primer and topcoat rollable? I'm next, refinishing mine. Who will get done first? I was gonna roll on two coats of gelcoat to the nonskid?

Dulux is from the...wait for it...

Dulux paint store. It's actually ICI Dulux paint center. We have a store her in Panama City. I believe they are a chain, much like Sherwin-Williams. Yes, it rolls on. We use the best rollers we can find. We get the smooth foam type, they are about $4 each and we go through 4 to eight of them. We mix half of the paint up at a time. About half a gallon per coat. When we did the hull, we started at the stern and by the time we got all the way around, we could start with the second coat. This time, I think we are going to allow a couple of hours in between coats, just because we are lazy.
