It's time to repaint. I'm not the original owner, but it looks like the deck has never been painted. Any recommendations? (MacGregor 1993 26C)
Thank you

I hear that Awlgrip is the best - that's what's on my boat's topsides, and it's held up well and looks great. It's not cheap, though, and it requires special care, like no wax, special cleaner, etc.

If the deck was never painted, why paint it? 1993 isn’t that old. The decks on my 198 O’Day 322 look Ok and I have t needed to paint them.

Once painted, you can’t really go back…

Painting a deck with anything but really good paint which can withstand the abrasion and flexing isn’t easy or cheap and requires a lot of prep. No clue what your deck looks like but consider whether it’s worth it before you end up with a solution worse than the problem.

You are absolutely right, once painted you can't go back. And perhaps it has already been painted. I will post a picture of its present state in the next day or two.

I don't regard painting a deck as a regular maintenance item. If it's really bad ... then maybe. You would need a strategy to deal with the non-skid. If you don't deal with the non-skid you may convert an ugly situation into a dangerous one.
I can't think of a paint that is as tough as gel coat. Awlgrip is awesome for topsides but it's not easily repaired. Imron is repairable but relatively easily scratched (This comes from the professional painter who did my topsides - 30+ years experience with boats and cars). I'm sure there are other options I think any paint adds maintenance problems.

Well, Little Harbor, now owned by Hinckley, paints the decks on their very expensive yachts. I think they use Imron, though not sure.

Check out this video it may help you with your decision since it contemplates paint versus gel coat and gives a multitude of pros and cons. Incidentally I painted my boat with polyurethane. I am including some pictures. Some before and afters.

This picture shows some examples of the surface. I know the dark areas look like dirt, but it is degradation of whatever the coating was. Most of the deck looks fine, but these areas have gotten worse this year

As long as you have not worn through the gelcoat, you can buff it. I buffed my nonskid last year using Total Buff and a hook and loop carpet brush on my rotory buffer. I then waxed the surface with Woody's Wax which is a surfboard wax and it non-slip.
