One of the three bolts on my Schaefer desk organizer has stripped threads and is lifting out. My first thought was to replace it and secure it with a flat washer and nut from below. Only two of the three bolts are accessible from below and, unfortunately, the one that needs replacing is located within a structural beam. There is no imbedded nut and/or plate visible from above. Can anyone offer a constructive solution for securing the organizer?

Drill a hole in the head of the screw, use a screw extracter to back it out. Remove the accessible bolts. Fill in the hole of the "problem hole" with epoxy, drill a pilot hole, re-bed all holes, and install your organizer.

deck organizer

Typically Hunter has it's deck hardware taped into aluminum plates. I'd remove the organizer and see if it will take an oversized bolt the next size up and tap the aluminum for that size. I'm guessing the originals are 1/4"x20 or smaller. As far as halyard loads, isn't he organizer only taking horizontal turning loads and re directing the lines to a stopper and winch? If that's the case the bolts are loaded in shear and an epoxy repair with two solid bolts should be a decent second choice. Check how many fasteners do you have for the sheet stoppers which are also loaded in shear (probably two per stopper).
A third choice would be to thru drill for that fastener and put S.S. washer and acorn nut on the underside of the headliner if there isnt any open space between the underside of the deck and the headliner. That's what I did when I upgraded my cabintop winches although the bolts are still taped into the aluminum but also have the acorn nut as kind of a 'lock-nut'. They are not protruding where someone would hit themselves in the noggin.

As Stu mentioned, there is probably an aluminum plate under this area. You may want to consider putting an insert into the plate that is the same size as the original (probably 1/4 x 20).

I don't know how important this is because your load is from the side.

I pulled the organizer off and there is no metal plate, just bolts. Only two of three bolts had washers and nuts. The problem bolt was butted up against a structual beam and there was no room for washers and a nut. . . which explains why it was lifting out.
