Deck/Mast Step Compression

I recently was caught in a small microburst; after doing the obligatory "spin around the washing machine" I noticed that my main and genoa were extremly "baggy". Then I noticed all my standing rigging was also "baggy" (not good). The end result gave me 3-4" of deck compression under the mast step. I are now stupider and wiser all the same for the experience. Need wisdom and strength and a whole lot of suggestions the reinforce the decking. Ideas anyone?

Sounds bad

3-4 INCHES? Jeez, that's a lot! Makes me think you pretty much have no coring left in your deck. That's bad. You're looking at a complete recoring, at the very least around your mast and chainplates. Whatever you do, DON'T sail your boat till it's fixed. Ugh! LaDonna

compression post

sounds like your missing a compression post to keep the deck where it needs to be....I've got an extra for an older 22 if you need one...Randy windward@softcom.net

I have a compression post

I have a compression post in place and in good condition. I had read in an earlier post (months ago) that under the the compression post (where the lock bolt is) there is a 2x4 supposed to be there to support the fiberglass housing. I intend to check that this weekend. Thanx for the offer of your spare post.

2 x 4 reinforcement?

In a previous response, there was mention of a 2 x 4 reinforcement near the keel lock. My keel housing shows signs of stress fractures and compression. I see no 2 x 4. Exactly where is this 2 x 4 located? Thanks Frank Wind Magic #10446

2x4 location

If you look under the port forward seat, forward of the lock-down bolt, there is a vertical 2x4 imbedded partially in the thwartships partition. This is tricky because it is also tapered somewhat. Bowed either direction is not good. Hit it with a hammer for the solid sound that it should make. If it is mush, so is everything above it.
