Deck leaks

I am having a problem with several leaks in my catalina 30. One of the ports seems to be dripping water. The hose going through the single starboard locker has a thin stream of water going down it too. Whether the two are connected or not, I dont know. The space beneath the forward berths also fills up with water, and I wonder whether this has to do with the fact that the anchor locker seal needs replacing. Is there anything I can do about these leaks? What would it cost to repair (give or take)? Who would I get to repair it? Thanks

interesting

The anchor locker seal is not your real problem here. I have the same problem and fixed it by fiberglassing the two aft corners in my anchor well. The maker for some reason never thought this was important so water would get in and run along the top of the hull and drip down into many unusual places. Apparently there are better things to use to plug those corner holes than fiberglass, so ask around some. This stopped some of my mystery leaks. I don't understand the part about the hose in the single starboard locker. I assume cockpit locker? My 1983 model has no hoses in this locker. If you mean the hanging locker then it could be the fresh water vent or fill hose then you are talking about pulling the deck fitting for the fill hose and bedding this properly to the deck. The best way to track down leaks is with a garden hose and someone outside the boat using it. Good luck. Richard

Learn your boat

The best way to know your boat is to do these minor fixes yourself. Your port lights are most likely as old as the boat so rebedding them is your best option. Not a technically difficult task and well discussed on this site. Search the forums for pretty detailed instructions on how to do this - just be sure to use 3M 4200 and NOT 5200. Do what Richard suggested & track down the leaks. If you can't figure it out, rebed your deck hardware starting at the bow & working your way back. That may sound daunting but it's better than a wet boat! And don't bother taking it to a yard - you'll pay an arm & a leg to do the stuff you could have done for about $20in a weekend. Get a good boat maintenance book (I like Ferenc Mate's "Shipshape") and go to it! LaDonna

Check (Leaking Mast) on Mid-size

La Donna has it. Don't pay someone to fix the leaks. Check the archives for repairs. You need a buddy to help unbolt some hardware. Unless you have GREAT BIG LONG ARMS! This is part of the fun of ownership! Isn't it?
