deck fill cover chain

During fueling at our last stop the chain that retains the deck cover broke in the middle. The cover was saved but now I want to re-attach the chain. The clip that holds the end of the chain is attached too far down the filler tube to reach. If I pull the ring holding the filler tube off the deck can I remove it in order to re-attach the chain. It appears that the flex tube from the tank to the filler cap has two screw clamps that are not accessible from inside the rear locker but would be accessible if I can pull the tube out through hole by unscrewing the filler cap ring.

Has anyone done this?

I'm willing to bet that the clamps wont fit through the hole while attached to the hose. This is a job to be done from below the deck. Seems to me a ton of effort for the sake of a small retaining chain. Is it really worth the effort? Mine has been off for years with no ill effects.

Alan is correct, the hose clamps won't clear the hole in the deck. When I replaced my deck fills, I had to take the clamps off the hoses first, from below. Not worth doing to fix the cap chain.

Thin Cord

Could you get a length of thin line, not fishing line but just thin cord, and then tie a clove hitch round a piece of rod or dowel about 1/4" diameter. Then put the dowel into the filler and gently slide the knot off the dowel and over the end of the chain. Using snipe nosed pliers pull it tight then tie the other end to the remaining chain on the cap.
BTW when the chain broke on my water filler I was able to re-engage the ends of the chain and squeeze them together with pliers.

Ditch the chain

I find chains on fuel caps are really a bad idea. It's just too easy to break the chain with the fuel nozzle when you put it in to fill up. You were lucky you managed to save the cap. On most of the newer Hunters the cap has nowhere to go but in the drink when the chain breaks.

Cap

The cap for our holding tank does not have a chain for functional reason. Of the four deck caps on our boat only one has an intact chain. As with Alan, it is a non issue for me so zero effort to reconnect or replace any of them. Just handle the caps as you would an expensive tool being used for on deck repairs. BTW, WM usually has replacements in stock if you need a spare.
