I want to run a spinnaker halyard and reef line back to the cockpit on the port side. I have the blocks to fit to the deck and assume there are metal plates to drill and tap embedded in the deck fibreglass. Before I drill can someone confirm that these plates are there or perhaps give more advice. (I've checked with magnets ; but this didn't confirm anything) Thanks.

Simon: If there is a backing plate where you are going to drill it is not magnetic anyway. It is *probably* aluminum. What I would do is drill it but have a piece of s.s. plate or large s.s. washers incase there is not any metal where you are drilling. I think that the only place they use these plates are in the top of the cabin. If you end up drilling and finding NO plate you should re-drill the holes to a larger size and then fill with epoxy. Then redrill the hole to the proper size. This will prevent any water getting into the core.

Very Few Backed Plates

I have seen this questioned asked before, and I think the answer is that the only backed plates are the "raised" areas - like the one on the starboard deck in the back that holds the halyards. Hunter could tell you for sure, but the port side raised plate may be the only one. Good luck.

Protect coring

You can also use an allen wrench or bent nail chucked into your drill to remove some coring before you inject epoxy into finished hole location. Protecting coring from water is very important. I bought an old H25 last year; replacing large sections of balsa core was by far the biggest part of the restoration job.

I drilled to metal

Simon I talked to Hunter before I drilled, but I added a triple rope clutch to both sides of the boat. There was a metal (if I remember correct aluminum) backup plate on both sides. I drilled and taped into the metal with out any problem. Be careful with aluminum because it is not as easy to get good threads as steel. Anywhere else on the deck but the two raised areas for clutches I would call hunter about. Dean "Chateau de Vent"

spinnaker

Just ask ole Crazy and I can tell you that you are in luck thanks to Hunter being ahead. IF you will look at the owner's manual, then it will show you the location for installation of the spinnaker gear on the deck. Hunter encapsulted aluminum plates in the deck. To make sure that you are correct, use a small bit to make sure you hit metal after going throught the deck glass. Make sure to caulk or it might be a pesky leak that will rain inside the cabin. don; Out of respect for the forum, I cannot give that information out but you know me as you identified where I use to be. Call Hunter Marine and ask for Gregg Emerson. He will direct you to me. I sure do miss the mountains. Been trying to find some of old Percy's finest down here. No luck yet but I still loose brain cells./ Crazy dave sniffing the gel coat fumes
