I just completed a restoration of a Hunter 25 and I am already eager to restore another bigger better boat. I have found a beautiful 42' in very good condition overall for $25K however as usual for such a price there is a problem, the deck has a soft spot from the cockpit coaming forward to the chainplate, otherwise the remainder of the deck has general moisture. Does this sound serious without knowing full knowledge of the situation or does anyone believe this is a great deal with a month of work or so, work that I am accustomed (considering the last year) of doing. It is a Chris Craft and I believe it would be a valuable boat once I have corrected this problem. Any imput is appreciated.

Is it delamination or just moisture deteriorated balsa? If the latter, budget $8-12,000 for a yard to do 1st class work. Matching colors when trying to fill insert holes is the real task. If the former, a yard will make a custom 2 skin piece interlayered with balsa. Again color is key. And won't you need a non-skid top piece?At that price and age take a hard look at the engine and rigging. Either could run you another $15,000. See what these boats are selling for on Yachtworld (85% of ask) and figure out whether the spread between that figure and your seller's ask is sufficient to cover the cost of these repairs. Of course your costs will be less if you are a skilled glassman, but if you are, are your skills for the seller or for you?

You did not really describe the boat

or the problem. What year? Is it fiberglass? What is "general moisture" and how do you know that the deck has it???My suggestion is to look at similar boats in good condition and see what they are selling for. Then take a guess at how long it will take you to fix it, multiply that by three if you are optimistic, and make a choice.

Boat description

Boat was described to me by seller as having deck moisture, and deck delamination. Boat is 42' Chris Craft, fiberglass circa 1960's. I may be able to fix this vessel, sisterships are selling in the $50k range, this is selling in the mid-twenties.

I would offer them half and pray that it works out. Survey would help even if you do it yourself.
