I've got a new to me 1978 Hunter 25. The deck and topsides are in need of painting. Before I go to the yard for a quote I was wondering if anyone can give me an approx. cost for painting with Awlgrip. I need a baseline to make sure I don't pay to much. I plan on removing the hardware myself to save money. Also, I'm not putting it in the water until next summer, so what time of year would it be cheaper to schedule the painting? Thanks guys.

Not Cheap

To really do this job right is going to to cost you, my friend. How much depends on labor rates in your area, but I will guess wildly and say $30 per foot, plus materials, plus hauling and blocking. If you are willing to strip the hardware and are not in a hurry, why not go the extra mile, mask the boat and paint it yourself? You could buy a how-to book for under twenty bucks and save yourself maybe over a thousand. Others will chime in here -stay tuned.

Its a huge job, and I would guess $30 a foot is conservative. There was just a big two part article in Cruising World that goes through the steps and tells you what it entails for either you or a yard.

You may want to sit down

If you want a top quality yard to do the prep (hardware removal, sanding, priming), sprayed on finish and striping too you'll be quoted as much as $200/ft. That's for the topsides. If you're looking to get the deck done, well, skies the limit. You can probably get it done for half that if you do the sub-contracting yourself. Maybe $50-$75/ft. if you do all the prep. $30/ft.? Dream on. The materials alone (paint, primer, tape, sandpaper, etc. will run several hundred dollars.

I'm painting my Catalina 27.

There are some good articals on the interlux site http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/ that might help you. Click on the "how to" section. There is an artical on topsides and one on decks. I'm doing the topsides of my Catalina 27 for well under $200 total cost. I'm using Interlux Toplac but Interlux Brightside is a little less expencive. These are two good high gloss paints.

I Awlgriped just my mast.

Materials cost over $500.00 as I recall. And that was 4 years ago. But my H34 has a REALLY TALL mast! :)

Hunter 25

I just restored a Hunter 25 that was striped of most everything. I considered a gel-coat but that would of entail a great deal of equip. and work so I opted for simply using Interlux topside, anti-fouling ablative and West Marine anti-slip deck paint, looks great however be careful as topside paint tends to sag, it was a cost effective way of painting the Hunter, remember even at it's best, these Hunters only average $5000.oo per sale.

Thanks Fred

Hope you didn't scare away the humble Ohion. Rick: My guess was thirty bucks PLUS materials and boat handling. The wild guess is based upon Ohio and not FL yard labor. But, hey, maybe you're right, we're dreaming.

Sure you need to paint?

I wish that I had a current picture of the topsides of my '79 H37C. I had some dings that I wanted fixed so I paid to have the entire boat(sides) patched, sanded, buffed, etc. The cost was almost a "boat buck" but the topsides look like new. Professional painting would have cost around five thousand. A DIY job using Interlux Toplac and the roll and tip method would have been sufficient at around $500. The related link might offer some help.

Hecks bells!

Im 62 yrs. young and I painted my 77 Catalina 30 decks last season with Interlux TopLac. I myself think it turned out beautiful. I have had good comments on the look. I used Imperial white for the toe rail and the cockpit areas and Off White revisited for the anti skid areas. This contrasted nicely. To date, it has held up very well and cleans easily. I used a good quality china bristle brush and cleaned the brush every 30 min. Also used 333 brushing liquid to help the flow. Took about 30 hours after minor prep work. If you can afford to pay to have it done, it is not a "hard job". good luck.

Hey Drew

Dreamin' is good. Hopefully the gist of my post was understood to be that rates can vary wildly and that like everything else, it can really pay to do your homework We had our H40 Awlgripped when we first bought it and I'm embarrassed to tell you how much we paid. Don't get me wrong, it's gorgeous and we love all the attention she gets but we've learned a lot since then. FWIW, I've heard good things about Toplac for the DIY'er and that it's far less fussy than Brightsides. Two part stuff is a whole 'nuther deal.

follow-up

Thanks for the responses so far. The topsides are oxidized and I might get away with just a good buffing. The deck is the big problem. The p.o. must have painted because there's paint peeling off te non-skid areas. I'd love to try myself, but I'm not confident my skills could live up to my expectations. I'd planned to spend 3-4k to get this done and since I'm keeping her for 8-10 years, it will be worth it.
