Mr Long sir. You can tether your cell phone to your computer. Add a cell phone amplifier and be in touch most of the time allong the shore. I know this as, I am in the gulf coast ICW as we talk. Congrats on making a decision. Congrats on going afloat. We loved it. Are discussing selling out and going back to living on a boat at 70 (me) the admiral is over 21.
So funny. Bill made a comment with my login. We share my computer most of time while cruising for internet. Occasionally he'll drag out his laptop. We tried wifi, but almost all are have security and need password. Cell phone tethering w/Verizon works for us. $50/mo when we are cruising, unsubscribe when we aren't. They prorate if don't use a full month. Couldn't live w/out Facebook to keep tabs on kids/grandkids. Also like the weather options on internet.

You can make a parabolic wifi antenna booster out of a can...Instructions are all over the web.
check out http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html
Mythbusters also proved you can polish a turd.

Those cantennas generally have very bad propagation patterns, are not weather friendly, and while the may on the surface improve signal strength, they often introduce bad multipathing issues into the signal causing signal quality to go down, retransmits to up, and actual throughput to go down, or the link integrity to fail entirely, and cause frequent reconnects.
