Deciding how to mount outboard on Oday 23

I have teh outboard mount off of my O'day 23 and need to decide what direction to take to remount it. I had the SS spring loaded mount, but hated it because it had a lot of play in it. When I would put the motor in reverse it would allow it to swing back a bit, making reverse even less effective. I pulled it off and welded the brackets pivot points, but am not thrilled about putting it back in.
I have considered just making a rigid mount out of SS plate and mounting it. I would just have to tilt the motor to get it out of the water. Very rigid, but no ability to get the motor close to the cockpit if it needs work on the water.
Otherwise it looks like the same bracket I took off would be the best one to put back on. I am running a 6 HP tohatsu 4 stroke right now. I would eventually like to get up to a 9.8 4 stroke.
Any suggestions?

I like to be able to get to the OB's innards easily, so my vote goes for the articulating bracket.

Might the difference in weight between the 6 and 9.8 (30 lbs.) necessitate a heavier sprung bracket mount?

My lifting aluminum Garelick Easy-In bracket seems to work pretty well, seems to move fairly smoothly. I wondered about lubing it, and preventative maintenance. A friend told me I could replace the pivot bushings myself. That didn't sound right to me, but I started looking for a bushing kit on the interwebs with no success. Finally I called Garelick, and they told me that the bushings cannot be replaced, because there is always considerable tension on the springs. They said if I had slop and wear, that I could send it in, and they would sell me a new one at reduced cost.

I'll keep mine as is, it's working fine, but also have it in the back of my head if I need to.

Is that the original bracket? If so, I wonder whether it can handle the weight and torque of a new 9.8 (four stroke, I assume).

I had a Garelick on my '23. I started with a 7.5Honda and later changed to a 9.9 Johnson. I didn't have any problems with it, just giving a regular spray of WD40. I'm in salt water. I can't imagine trying to get the entire motor out of the water using only the tilt and not having the spring assist on the 9.9. Even with the aid of the springs it took a lot of back muscle. My only problems with the motor swinging in reverse was when I forgot to lock it in place.

I gave up trying to use my Garelick to lift my 8 hp two stroke Nissan on my Oday 23. I leave the mount on its lowest setting and tilt the engine out of the water. I just can't get enough leverage from the cockpit to move the mount. However, I once "backed" into my slip, and I was able to easily get the mount to move up and down while I stood on the dock behind the engine.

A friend of mine has some kind of lifting motor mount on her Com Pac 19. I don't know what brand it is, but it sure is a royal PITA. The stern pulpit doesn't help much. And it's still not enough in lifted position to get the motor all the way out of the water, and at that point, it's tough to get the motor to tilt, and lock tilted up. Puts a nasty kink in the fuel line.

Man, I can't stand sailing her boat, fighting with that motor, and the boat's inability to point. One day, we were trying to short tack back up the relatively narrow lake. Every 3rd tack, she'd sheet the jib too hard, too fast, and the bow would get blown leeward, erasing any CMG for the last tack. I finally gave up and said, "I gotta get back home, I'm expected for dinner. Let's motor back to the marina." Imagine how much pride I swallowed, how much frustration I felt, to have to do that when there was good, viable wind... In either of my centerboard boats, we would have been back at the marina by then...

Couple of times my 4hp 4 stroke on the orginal Newport 17 mount almost caused me to go over the motor into the water. I ended up putting a loop of rope on the mount so I could lift from a standing position. That worked much better.
I sold the boat and bought an O'day 25. It came with a 9.9 Yanaha on a hydraulic assist mount. That works a lot better. Not sure of the brand. Probably 10 yrs old.

My bet is that motor mount wasn't designed for a 6 hp 4 stroke in the first place. Probably weighs quite a bit more than my 10 hp 2 cycle Chrysler. I have the cheap 2 spring motor mount from Catalina Direct and it is solid as a rock.

Mine is the SS Garelick and should be up to the task, but sadly was not. I have i welded in teh down position for now, and may just remount it until I decide.

I recently bought from Garelick a spring loaded adjustable motor mount that would accommodate my new Tohatsu 9.8 OB. The recommended part that I purchased is item Number 71033;01 which is strong enough to accommodate my 9.8 Tohatsu. Hope this helps. If your old Bracket will not accommodate the weight of the 9.8 motor let them know and they will discount the purchase of the new unit.

I have had the same issues with a 9.9 2 stroke 25" shaft. Very hard to lift and tilt out of the water. What solved my problem was to replace the pivot rods on the motor mount bracket with longer ones. Went to Home Depot got some ss helper springs and attached them to the longer rods. Every 3or 4 years I replaced the springs because or rust. Hope this helps.

I replaced the top mount bolts with eye bolts on my engine mount. Then added 2 springs from the mount plate to the motor plate and can pull my 9.9 up with one hand now. Dropping it down I have to shove down on the motor to lock it in position but I think thats fair!

My outboard can be tilted on it's own built in tilt bracket without having to mess with the outboard bracket mounted on the block. As it is, there's just enough clearance for it to be raised and locked into position with the engine turned so that he handle is down and pointed to Starboard.

I agree with Mike. It's a whole lot faster and better to raise it this way.
When I need to do any work on the engine at the dock, I'll just put out enough slack in the bow line and let the wind swing her out far enough to make the engine more accessible while standing at the dock.

I just upgraded from an old 15 hp Evinrude 2-stroke to a 9.8 hp Nissan. I was a little concerned about being able to lift the extra weight on the pivoting motor mount because it was hard enough to lift the old Evinrude. I tied a line to my stern rail and ran it through a small block down at the mount. Now I can pull it up while standing or sitting and get a 2x mechanical advantage to boot. At least it works great trying it out with the boat on the trailer. I'll be testing it on the water in a couple of weeks.
