As many of you know, as Americans, we are "overly fat", heavy, pleasantly plump, I like to call it. I think it has to do with us being taller, bigger boned than most societies, but then again, what do I know, I camped out in a park last night, next to a Motel 6.
Seriously, the folks at the FDA are suggesting we cut our salt consumption nearly in half. Most of the salt we consume doesn't come from the salt shaker on the table, but it's already in the foods we buy everyday and most don't know that. It's even in our cereals we buy.
I have come up with a sure fire way to cut down on "overly fat" people. Many "overly fat" people are on a food stamp program where the federal government, through subsidies, lets recipients purchase food stamps (coupons, for the PC) for their families for pennies on the dollar. While the selection of food is somewhat controlled, as to what the recipient can and cannot buy. I feel there should be stricter controls and not allow those receiving this aid to buy junk food, like soda and potato chips and the like. It would cut down greatly on obesity in America.
We must change our eating habits, along with our life styles. Salt retains water and it raises blood pressure. It sure does taste good though, and I'm more guilty than most. I know That I've cut back on fried foods and sugar. I thought Splenda was the way to go, till I googled it. Now I use Truvia. Remember when butter was bad and oleo, then margarine was good? I'm back to butter, salted even. Land-O-Lakes. What can I say I'm a food label junkie, just as my wife is into labels on clothes, I'm into labels on food. We do get our eggs from private individuals who have chickens (nice, real nice). No steroids here, at least we try. We've also gotten into Almond milk. Pretty good, I must say. Thoughts?

Ct, for heaven's sake, we can't have

the gummit telling us what to eat. Isn't it against the law where y'all are from to talk like that ?

CT, actually I think you're on to something good. With computer systems how they are, it would be fairly easy for the food companies to do this as well. For the foods that meet the health standard's you're talking about, they could put a "food stamp eligible" sticker on, or something like that. You can only use food stamps for food stamp eligible foods.

Eddie, the gov't wouldn't be telling people what to eat. People can buy whatever they want, but that doesn't mean the government has to pay for it.

As for the butter vs margerine type stuff, I think that the key, as to most things, is "everything in moderation." (Not that I'm that good at moderation, but that's my problem.)

A local radio team once put out their weight loss program - "Eat less, move around more!" Brilliant in its simplicity.

Wink, I know. I'm just mentioning that to my Right

wing reactionary friend of mine. Don't you just love how he brings up a politically charged issue here rather than the War Room where it belongs ?

Ct, the issue raised by this post. I would assume that

you do not desire my input. I mean, I'm questioning your authority, for Pete's sake. Of course y'all don't like it.

Just approve minimally processed food staples like fresh fruits and veges, milk, juice, cheese, rice, pasta, etc.....

The feds could post standards of approved foods. The manufacturers would have to meet those standards (of salt, sugar, and fat) or they would only be able to sell to 'cash' buyers.

I'd even have the stores post a little green sticker on the price tags of the approved foods.

Have you guys noticed the new wheat allergy craze? Everyone seems to be jumping on the "gluten free" bandwagon. Funny, I bought a bag of dried cranberries the other day. On the outside of the bag, the manufacturer proudly stated in bold letters GLUTEN FREE FOOD! Ummmmm, yeah....... I guess it was a true statement as it was dried fruit.

Why not claim that "no animals were hurt in the making of this product" too?

Anyway..... a good idea CT.

My wife, Audrey won't buy any products if the mfg used animals in the testing of it. Some of the cleaning supplies don't work all that well. What the hell, do it twice if that be the case. But who am I to complain? I don't do the cleaning. She also won't eat anything with mono sodium glutamate (sic) in it. Nor will she eat any steroid, antibiotic injected animal.
We used to eat fish but they are increasingly becoming farm raised. Ever see how a fish is raised on a farm? You'll never eat another I tell you. Packed in a tank with no room, injected with hormones for growth and anti bacteria to stay alive, while feeding off the bottom and each other (we all know what sinks to the bottom) The industry creates the need for antibacterial hormones just to keep the fish alive alive. Needless to say, I'm becoming increasingly hungry.
There must be a way of electronically scanning a "approved" product that can be consumed by program recipients when using the food stamps or card which ever system they use now. Scan the product and scan the card and the two shall work together. Anything not proper will be cash only. Anything to help fight the obesity problem we have. If the obese can't do it themselves somebody must step forward with ways to make eating healthy the only choice. Especially if they want govt paid food to eat.

Keep it up,

Actually MSG isn't a problem for me. Trans fats are an unfortunate product of overly processed/manufactured foods. We never eat trans fats and rarely eat processed foods. My wife's mother is a medical doctor who specialized in nutrition and natural medicine- holistic medicine of sorts.

Basically, I cook with simple unprocessed foods. Lots of fresh veges, onions, garlic, salads, dried beans, soups, rice...... I also love to cook with the pressure cooker (usually day old meat sold at 50%) using beer and spices. I made a good curry dish tonight.

They use a credit card type system now. Any nerd who writes software programs could set up the system in a few weeks. They just need to have the ability to unify a national the barcode directory for products in grocery stores.

Troy, ( ref #12 ) "manufacturers would have to meet

those standards". My, how liberal of you. Of course you won't mind the incredible amount of beurocracy that would bring about. Meanwhile, public schools in poor areas are losing more and more dedicated teachers due to budget cuts. What's wrong with your picture ?

Simple solutions

Read labels, avoid refined sugars, corn syrup, and HFCS. I've lost over 40lbs. (kept it off for years) When you quit refined sugar, your body will adjust, veggies are tasty, fruits are like desserts, and sweet potatoes like candy.

Remember refined sugar has many different names, evaporated cane juice, brown sugar, ect. still garbage. Take your sugar from natural sources, like honey or maple syrup, and don't let the restaurants ever serve you corn syrup and call it maple, drives me nuts, if I wanted corn syrup on my pancakes I'd ask for it., cheap jerks, so pissed off when I go for breakfast and there is no real maple syrup, then if I smashed them in the head with an axe, I'd go to jail, mixed up world ect..

google princeton studies on HFCS. http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/refined-sugar-the-sweetest-poison-of-all.html
