When buying a boat, especially new, what are people's experiences with using a dealer not close to home? Are there certain territorial rights which need to be recognized or is every dealer eligible to sell boats anywhere? What are the experiences, if any, with getting warranty work and commissioning performed, especially if there are limited options where you are berthed or worse yet, the only nearby dealer sells the same brand. I have been told by one Florida dealer that he will sell anywhere in the U.S.. Good idea? Thanks

My understanding

I can't swear ona stak cof bibles this is ture but it's what I believe to be true: Legally, dealers have to be free to sell anywhere they want to. However, Hunter requires that the dealer perform warranty work on the boats the they sell -- no matter where it is. So, if you do buy long distance, be sure to have a clear (and written) understanding with the dealer about how warranty work will be performed, where it will be performed, at who pays for any required travel. I did this once and it worked out fine, although I had to flexibile about travel issues. It cost me a few extra bucks and some convenience, but given the quality of the people and work it was well worth it.

dealer, dealer, who's got the dealer....

I had some issues with the dealer who sold me my Hunter and was a full day sail away from him. The dealer would only give me one trip to my boat for warranty corrections. I got to the point where I did not trust the dealer after he said he would not do any more for me than he was required to do. I was afraid to leave the boat with him for fear of retribution, because I called Hunter to complain about him. After several long conversations with Hunter, they insisted I return to the dealer from whom I purchased the boat. I paid for the cost of the repairs and/or dealt with Hunter directly. Hunter has been very good to work with, but they do back up their dealers.

Hunter Dealers Every Where?

There are no Hunter dealers in South Dakota. We purchased a new Hunter in the spring of '97 from the dealer in Miami Beach. A friend bought one at the same time. After delivery of our craft, a person flew up to South Dakota and stayed six days commissioning them. Any warrantee work was done by local tradesmen who were reimbursed by Hunter. The system worked for us and can for you. Sailkota
