I recently posted about my engine (Yanmar) problem. Thanks to all that responded. After draining 2 batteries and spending 3 afternoons purging my fuel lines for air, I found the real problem. There was almost 3 gallons of water in my fuel tank. Apparently I had a faulty fuel cap o-ring. Thanks to all that responded! It is truly appreciated. Matt Wolf s/v Wu Wei 1989 H28

Fuel tank o'ring!!!!
Bill: The o'ring for the fuel tank (on the cap) will dry out over the years. They should be replaced to prevent water from getting into the tank. Probably more chance of water entering through the cap than in tha actual fuel.

I just replaced the whole cap this summer and the stern tank is the primary fuel fill so I wouldn't even have reason to check the deck fill. I will now, thanks.

Phil, got any O-rings
AFter reading this I'm ready to replace my O-ring Sure would be nice if I could order a few order the O-rings through HOW based on Hunter model/year. On second thought, that may be too much trouble for a 1.00 O-ring; maybe and assortment pack?

Just a matter of getting the correct size.

But the margin to expertise ratio is pretty bad... and while it may have changed by now Yanmar was not keen on folks selling their parts online. Go figure. I recommend Torressen (dieseldirect.com) as the best place to get what you need.

Same thing happened to me..........
.....over last winter. I feel your pain: draining 24 gallons of diesel/water, replacing deck fill, disposing of old fuel, replacing with new. I just hate to have to go backwards in order to go forward.

I had the same problem and the deck fill cap O-ring was the cause. You could also replace the standard all metal fuel filter canister (nearest the fuel tank)with a larger Raycor unit with a see-through plastic bowl on the bottom. You could easily see water and sediment and periodically drain it off before you had a problem big enough to kill the engine.
