Missing women?

Doubtful it's the same person but about a week and a half ago a women fell off the back of a 26 foot power boat and was missing in the Sassafras River. I never heard if they had found her or not. Any idea where they found the body or if it was a man or women?

Any details?

Ross, first off sorry to hear you had to cut the trip short this is just a great time of year to enjoy the bay. Perhaps you'll have yet another chance to do so as the weather so far has been great. As for the women that was lost do you have any details on her? Mike

Better him than you

Better that he found her than you. Did you get to spend a night outside Turner this weekend? I moved the boat to Baltimore on Saturday with my Golden Retriever Miss Gretchen as crew. It was blowing 20-25kts with gusts to 30. The spume off the bow wake when we crashed into waves would blow sideways one moment and spray me the next. Much to my dismay the wind always seemed to be on the nose the entire trip. I did do some motor sailing but Ms Gretchen turned green and got sick on me so it was the iron genny the remainder of the trip. Most unusual for her I might add. Overall not a bad ride in spite of the chop. Hope you got some sailing in on Sunday. Mike

Mike , We motor sailed down on sunday

and anchored opposite Number 10 marker for the night. Chacked the weather this morning and tomorrow is forecast for rain so we deciced to come home today . Forecast wind 8-12 from the south. It looded good going down river and we hit the bay and turned north into the most confused seas I have ever seen out there 3-4 foot waves from two directions. After about an hour everything settled down to a normal wave and wind pattern and we had a nice ride homeon a broad reach. Sailed all the way to Havre de Grace.

We wernt down last weekend but

Were sailing Sat 12th and Sunday 13th the weekend before,,,,, we must have gone right by her..... We always see fast powerboats bouncing off the incoming tide current waves,,,,,,, Im not suprised she fell out, but I am suprised it took hhim 15 mins to discover she wasnt in the boat anymore. Heres the last news I could find.....But nothing on the male that dies with the PFD on. a sad story Body Of Missing Woman Recovered From River POSTED: 2:00 pm EDT October 15, 2007 UPDATED: 2:35 pm EDT October 15, 2007 BETTERTON, Md. -- Authorities have recovered the body of a Baltimore County woman who disappeared Thursday from her husband's boat on the Sassafras River near Betterton. Natural Resources police said that the body of Sharon Andrews, 61, of Monkton, was found by a bass fisherman Sunday afternoon near the river shoreline near Turner's Creek. The fisherman contacted police, who recovered the body and sent it to the state medical examiner for an autopsy. Andrews' 65-year-old husband, John, told authorities Thursday that his wife had been in the stern of the couple's 26-foot powerboat as it entered the mouth of the Sassafras. After 10 or 15 minutes, he looked back and she was gone, he said. The couple had left earlier in the day from Middle River.

That's strange

I agree, how do you not know someone fell off your boat? That's either very strange or very stupid, I don't know which. Just a shame for her as perhaps she was fine when she hit the water. I can't imagine going in and watching the boat run away without anyone knowing where you are. Survival mode for sure.

And in NJ/NY this past weekend

Tug boat and pleasure boat incident in the Ambrose Channel - 1500 ft of line from a barge, 10:30 at night, 24 ft. power boat. Two men dead, one survived. Very tragic and very avoidable. People need to learn rules and safety - especially if they are in shipping lanes.

years ago, in college I worked on a

Lobster Boat in Narragansett RI, I was a sternman setting off the trawl, Everyone always told me, its not the fall in the water that usually kills you, its what you hit on the way down.....stern, prop, even the water at high speeds...exc......it didnt say if she was wearing a life jacket, but as always it would have made a difference if she was knocked unconsious. the shore is not that far and the water is still fairly warm she could have swam to shore if she was able. tragic loss

?

I accept that the tug was doing everything right so this is just a question. Why would a tug need 1500 feet of cable towing a barge? Seems like it would be tough to control that far away.

Doug, Some barges look a lot

like a ship complete with a wheel house. 1500 feet isn't much when you are out in front of a 10,000 ton barge. My little boat will carry 300 feet from 5 knots. How far will a 10,000 ton barge carry?

1500' = 500 yards

One reason for the long towing cable is so when they want to slow down or stop they now have a margin of safety between them and the barge. The barge itself has no brake or screws and so will continue moving until its inertia (forward momentum) is used up. This tug/barge were on the ocean and their objective would be to get the barge to point B as quickly, safely and easily as possible. The cable would allow them to get up to some impressive speeds on the ocean with the tug merely maintaining the forward momentum of the barge until they needed to slow down or stop. I have watched some of these tugs on NY Harbor shift from towing to pushing their barges so they could then go up the Hudson. They seem to prefer pushing rather than towing on inland waters as they can now apply reverse power (stopping ability) directly to the barge. We always stay away from these guys on the river as they plow through (some at close to over 10 knots) with a bone in their teeth. Even if we are on a starboard tack. No way can they stop on a dime even given a contrary current. Too many tons of stuff moving through water at speeds we only wish we could attain on our sailboat. Put it this way, those guys are working with big, heavy equipment and we are a real potential danger to them as they to us, but we are only out there for the fun of it. Every captain of a pleasure craft should know this and avoid them at all costs. The consequences of not doing so are painfully obvious. They were lucky that they weren't all killed.

My Mom was the women found

All, My mom was the women found in the Sassafras. So to set the record straight....I don't think it was ten minutes btw the time he last talked to her and when he noticed she was missing but I'm sure it seemed like an eternity to Dad. They were traveling at 18 knots and the wind was blowing about 30 from the NW (they had following seas) and it was quite rough. He had entered the Sassafras and was talking to her as they entered (she was asking about why the boat engines rev up when the boat is surfing) but was returned his focus to driving the boat as he was worried about missing the mark at ordinary point given the conditions. Mom was stubborn and refused the life jacket that dad had asked her to put on earlier when they were in the bay and said she would be fine. Mom has had some falling spells in the last 6 months that we have not been able to figure out. ....The seas had eased when they entered the river so I think she let her guard down and lost her balance again..Who knows what she may have hit when she fell over or if she landed wrong in the water.....With the engines and the wind if she yelled there is no way dad would have heard her..... Dad is truly a mess as they were married for 40 years and were retiring next year and he is blaming himself partly for this tragedy...Mom's Body was found at 2:30 on 10/14 washed ashore by a Bass fisherman. We have boated our entire lives and this tragedy will change us forever. ..Mom was a wonderful women and my children and I are going to miss her. A life saving lesson: A life jacket is something, that although often a pain, can truly save your life. When travling at high speed, or in rough weather, wear a life jacket. John Andrews III

Heart breaking ...

That is a very sad story and it must be truly devastating to your father. We hope that you all can find comfort with her memory. It is sad when you agonize over the instant that you can never have back to change.

John, I very much enjoy that section of the river

But it can get incredibly rough when the wind and tides are against each other. We went in to that same stretch of the river in our 30 foot sailboat with 20-25 knots from the south west and it took a few hours for the adrenalin to calm down. I am sure that your Dad had his hands full just keeping control of the boat. I know that he will be heart broken but he must not beat himself up over this very tragic accident. Please extend my sympathy to the rest of your family. Ross
