De-powering

I would like to know if anyone has some good ideas for de-powering a spilt backstayed BandR rig. We sail in winds form 10 to 25 knots. I find I have to reef after 15-18 knots in order to have a controled helm. On my previous CandC I would just apply more backstay pressure and mainsheet pressure. I have a regular vang and a friend said get a solid vang to flatten the main. Any ideas?

Sail Twist

On my 340, I tend to reef at the same point as you as it seems to give me better sail shape and resulting speed. However, if you wish to lose some power, it would seem that you would want to loosen your vang, allow more sail twist (rather than flatten your sail), and allow more air to dump off the top of the sail. This would allow you to retain more sail additn wind to the top portion of the sail. I'll be curious to read other responses to your question. Jim

Agreed and .....

Steve, I agee with jim to depower. But I am interested to know what is your goal. Less heel? More Speed? Too much weather helm, nervous significant other? yadda, yadda! lol I have found that to let your sail twist off to a max, haul your traveler all the way to windward, let out your main sheet to trim the sail, and then, use your vang to control the rise in your boom. good luck, Mike D

Good advise from Mike and Jim

The only way we can handle our 430 Legend in wind above 15k is to induce twist up top and dump the wind. If we dont the weather helm makes it impossble to handle.
