Our new 36'Hunter is starting to grow mold. Being in Seattle, she stays at the dock all year. I got a Soleus low-temp dehumidifier. Anyone out there use a de-humidifier? Do you leave it in the boat at 50% setting when you are not going out for a while? How dangerous is the little spark that occurs when the thermostat goes on and off? Really want to get this problem under control.

Hi guy, I've had boats in Puget Sound for a long time. For the past twenty or twenty five years I have used two silver disks from West Marine that just blow air, no heat. It is the movement of air that will keep you from having mildew. I now take nothing home, all cushions stay on board, indoor and cockpit cushions and I never have mildew. They run all the time from fall to spring and I've never replaced them. Just the movement of air will take care of things. And they are cheap to operate.

I wish you well.

Wipe down all of your wood with Orange or Lemon oil. This really helps too. We use the air dryer with fans, "Damp Rid" hanging bags, and even regular fans on the boat.

All of these things help. It is also good to get down to the boat when it is NOT raining and just air it out

I used a regular household dehumidifier for a few years because of the moisture here in south Louisiana. It worked well but I had to watch the setting because wood might start to warp if the unit was set too dry .. I would secure it on the counter in the galley so it could drain into the sink.. The only problem was that the first thing that I had to do was to heft this beast into the car before going out and re-install after sailing.. I now have a built in air conditioner that has a dehumidify cycle that it does while I am away.. MUCH more convenient.

Here in the south people just leave a couple of 100 Watt incandesent bulbs burning below and never have mildew problems. Keeeps the moisture down.

I am likee klaudie, I just leave my A/C uit running 24/7. Power is included in slip rent.. :).

The unit will be as safe as when left on at home. We keep a dehumidifier on during the summer and it does make a difference. We have a hose to allow it to drain into the bilge. A setting of 50% is adequate, less than that would be too dry. When sailing, we take it with us, it fits in the entrance to the V-berth.

Soleus brand not working

OK. Bought a Soleus 40 pt dehumidifier which works in low temps, being up here in PNW. Tried it out in our basement and after 6 days on high in a small 10x10 room (with a sump pump and drain in the room) it only went down to 65% humidity when 50% needs to be the goal. Plan to try out on the boat but cannot imagine it doing better with a boat sitting in the water. Anyone else have this problem? Maybe another brand or model? May have to go thru the hassle and expense to return it. Really wanted this to work.
