I will be in Punta Gorda for a meeting 01/21 so I would like to rent a boat for a day sailing Sunday 01/20. So far all I have found is Burnt Store Marina & they have a Cal24 for $275/day. Seem like nice folks. Otherwise not much online for a bareboat in that area. Any other possibilities known? The group may stay out on Boca for the weekend, so something out there would work too. Also, what is the likelihood of decent weather? Remember, to a New Englander, 60 degrees is going to feel downright tropical. Although it would be good to know if I should bring foulies.

Good Idea ... good plan

This is a good area to sail at any time of year. Pine Island sound is protected and easy to get around. Lots of island exploration and tropical charm. However I cannot offer rental advice, I can tell you the weather generally for january is cool and mild with average highs around 60+. Clear skies and starry evening abound, but lows get to about 40+ on an average. Cold fronts begin to roll in on a weekly rate it seems. Race week(mid february) peaks with the coldest temps. Northerners must not be fooled by the temps. This is a tropical land and when temps dip it is a tropical cold which means it is a humid cold. Much different than up north. This cold seems to seep right down into your bones and chills the hell out of you. Bring along a blanket and a blazer. That is my advice.

Shorty, I have a well maintained Catalina 27 and I would be happy to take you out for a 3 or 4 hour sail if I can schedule it. The boat is docked in St.Pete on the Tampa Bay side. I would guess that is about 1 hour north of where you will be staying. I see your from Mt Desert. I vacationed in Bar Harbor last summer and have a brother living in Falmouth. I lived on Sebago many years ago and would certainly enjoy the company of a fellow New Englander. I can be reached at sailorjack@verizon.net "GO PATS!" Jack

Florida in January

Cold fronts still push deep into Florida in January, and as ClownPilot said, they go through about once every six to eight days. The weather on any given day will depend on where the current front is and it can be very unstable on the day the front actually passes over. Rather than trying to explain the typical weather patterns, here's a link to SailFlow's current seven-day forecast for Sanibel Island, which is about as close to Punta Gorda as I could get. Just check it again the day before you leave for your trip. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Weather etc

Thanks! for the invitation Jack. Let me see how things progress. I was hoping to explore the Port Charlotte area. On the weather, sounds best to not reserve too far in advance. Reservation is a guarantee, so money is spent.

Rentals

I live at the Burnt Store Marina with a Catalina 350. I'm sorry, but I do not know of any rentals within Punta Gorda. The Cal 24 must be with Southwest Sailing, their the only rentals I know of. Their are captained charters out of Fishermen's Village. What size were you looking for?

So how do you like Burnt Store as a home port,I was checking it out last year as a home port for my Hunter 36 and also looking Fishermans wharf. Does Burnt store have TV and Wifi hook ups included withe water and electric. My wife and I really fell in love with Burnt Store,we have a house in Port Charlotte and didn't seem too far to travel to Burnt Store,is it full this winter or are there still slips available. When deciding on a boat we did like the Catalina 350 and 36 but were happy previous hunter owners and just love the Hunters. Nick

Catalina 350 Punta Gorda
Marina

It's not filled up in the marina, but they have decided to raise the rates starting in Feb. Were currently at $11.00 per foot and will change to $12.50. No cable, wi-fi for the marina and you can subscribe to satellite television. Water is included, extra for electric. I think Fishermen's Village is about $16.00 per foot. Have been here for alittle over three years.

Yes, Southwest Sailing

Not so concerned w/size, the Cal24 would probably be fine. I don't think any in my group are interested. I think a bunch of them are going fishing, so I'll probably be single handing. The 24 should single hand OK, I'm used to my Pearson 34 but that has a wheel pilot.

Too Bad

That's a shame to hear the price is going up. But I pay that amount for the summer season now and $49 ft for sitting on the hard over the winter and no sailing,so that price not bad and you still get to go sailing. In 2001 I payed $1000 for the season not counting winter storage which was $25 ft and that was not a marina with all the electric ,pool, showers, boy it never gets cheaper. My wife think's I should get a job but I really like being retired and no more work. Nick

Yes, 50 degrees down here can really chill you

to the bone. I'm not sure if the formula for the "wind chill" or "feels like temperature" includes a variable for humidity as it does make a big difference. The other day was 59 degrees with a 15 knot brezee and I was freezing. Shorty whenever I go out this time of the year I pack a good sweatshirt and my foulies. Keeping a pair of gloves handy is not a bad idea either as them destroyer wheels can get awful cold.
